Hello all, I am having a weird problem with my new build.

problem : On my old Q6600 system I was able to run dual monitors, play a game on main monitor and watch videos on the other monitor via media player classic with no lag. Now when I play videos and game at the same time, whenever the song/video switches, I get a stutter in my game until the song/video is fully loaded. here are the things I tried;
- clean install of new drivers
- fresh windows install
- running one display
- closing applications in background (besides game and media player)
- turning off windows services (windows search, netbios, other network services)
- running virus scanner (somewhat waste of time on fresh install)
- putting audio/video files on same partition

can not remember what else I did to see if that did fix my problem. Also I notice windows 7 x64 is slower then on my Q6600 system when opening programs and moving window boxes.

thoughts : I am not sure what I can do to isolate the problem. I sent my gigabyte motherboard for an rma along with my video card, both passed inspection and sent back but still having the same performance problems. Really annoying that my older system is running circles around my new system in terms of performance:confused:

I am needing some help on what programs to use to pinpoint the problem. Looking for some insight and hopefully can get this sorted so I can get back to whatever it is I do :p

system specs :

cpu : i5 2500K @stock
motherboard : gigabyte P67-UD4-B3 @bios F4
psu : corsair hx750w
memory : gskill 1600 8GB ripjawsx
video card : gigabyte 6950 2GB with catalyst 11.7
1x western digital HD
1x intel SSD 40GB-V
1x samsung spinright F4 firmware patched
 
Have you tried not installing the OS on the SSD but on a regular hard drive?

I tired installing the OS on the SSD only, a regular HDD only, switched to different sata ports, but performance still seems the same.
 
Try using an older video card driver?
Swap out video cards?
Swap out motherboards?
 
Can you pull up something (can be Task Manager) and monitor your computer while you do this?
 
i have tried an old geforce 260 core 216 and still get the same results as my 6950.

I looked at task manager and only thing that seems weird is the DWM.exe (desktop window manager) cpu usage keeps fluctuating from 0%-2% when playing a game and or watching videos.
 
Did you make sure to install all the necessary drivers? Motherboard, storage controller, audio, etc?
 
I will reinstall the OS and install EVERYTHING from the CD and see if that helps. If that does not work, I am going to short the CMOS and take out the battery overnight and see if that helps.
 
ok a little update on my problem.

I reinstalled the OS and installed all needed drivers off the motherboard cd. I still had the same performance issues as stated above. I then shutdown and took out the motherboard battery and put a jumper on the "clear cmos" pins. I then left the computer like this overnight and when I got everything back up and running I still am having the same performance issues.

what I think the problem is when I updated the bios the first time, I did not use @bios like some threads say to do. I also did not clear cmos after "loading optimized defaults" in the bios. I assume the old bios settings overriding the new bios settings.

I also notice when I have everything at stock, and the computer is booting the boot info screen, it says my cpu is running @34 multiplier when it is @33 in the bios. so not sure if this is just the bios corruption or not.

anyone got any ideas?
 
What timing and voltage is your RAM running at compared to what its specs are? My first SB build did something very similar - lockups, stuttering, slow boots - and I found that the gigabyte P67A-UD3 board I was using didn't allow 1.65v like the RAM required, running at 1.64v had issues and forced it to revert to a "safe" bios and run the wrong timings but 1.66 cleared up all the problems. Just something else to check.
 
my memory is rated @ 1600 8-8-8-24 1.5v

but I will see if bumping up the voltage will help. thanks for the suggestion.

Does the bios match what the memory is rated at? Also how many modules are you using? If only 2, are the right slots populated for dual channel mode (my gigabyte was slots 1 and 3 for 2 modules)? Just trying to give you a few more things to check.
 
It sounds like you may have a DPC Latency problem with your new computer. Download this and see if you get a big spike into the red when the problem happens.
