Samsung 2333T

The 2333T's gamma is pretty weird Im not sure if this is a calibration issue or what, I noticed when playing Minecraft Im still able to see in completely dark areas such as caves, on my PX2370 I always had to place torches to see where im going.

Im able to see box #1 on both monitors with the lagon LCD black level test

(monitors were in clone mode):

Try changing the gamma mode. Mode 2 & 3 seem to clip the black level more. This panel does have a very good color gamut though and you're probably seeing what Minecraft intended :).

Does the blurring improve much when you select fastest response time and clock it to 72Hz? Still thinking if I should get the U2311H or this. I dont like the AG coating on dell.

Just wait a week or 2 for the PRAD review of the Asus ML239H so we can find out if it uses aggressive AG or not.

seems to have similar disregard for lightbleed in their quality control as the average TN screen out there, reading newegg user reviews.

You take equal chance of getting a screen with light bleeding when buying ANY of the low end screens. How many times do I have to tell you this.

Just because you got lucky wiht 1 or 2 screens doesn't mean X panel type won't have bleeding. That is not how it works.

Dell has the premium panel quarantee thing going at least. Your saying that has no effect on if you will get a lightbleedy one or not? And samsung/dell both will come to your door and give you a new one if something goes wrong, so I'll rather pick samsung or dell.

Are you serious? Have you not read any of the recent threads on this site?

LG makes ALL the IPS panels. Their quality control sucks, does not matter if it is a 250$ e-ips panel or 1300$ Dell 3011, they still can come with light bleeding and tinting.

No one said anything about companies exchange programs. Dell/NEC/HP have the best replacement programs, not sure about Samsung/Asus.

If you get the Asus from a local retailer I'm sure you could exchange it hassle free if there were any issues.

Well it appears they offer a 3 year door-exhange warranty so I ordered the ML239H.

I love mine, probably have not calibrated it properly but movie mode looks great

FWIW, the ICC profile that I posted before was created with LPROF. The results looked good, but for whatever reason, the profile only affected images opened in Photoshop. I eventually got the results that I was hoping for (system-wide correction) after creating an ICC profile with Argyll CMS and dispcalGUI -- and dispcalGUI is far easier to use than LPROF. LOVE this monitor after calibration -- much happier with it than I was with the CRT that it replaced.

Leopardi, I can see no difference between the three response time settings (@ 60 Hz). The response time is horrible on these... I don't think you can do anything to improve that. It's bad... really bad.

Color, gamma, and black crush issues can all be calibrated away. But nothing will improve inherent flaws like poor response time, color/gamma shift at close range, or color uniformity.

Can you post your latest ICC? I know its not ideal to use other peoples profiles but its worth a shot.

Thanks, That made a big change on my monitor although color is a little off, can you tell us what your monitor settings are (Gamma mode / RGB values etc.).
I think I included them in a text file in that archive, didn't I? Anyway, the profile was created with these monitor settings:

Contrast: 74
Red: 50
Green: 54
Blue: 35
Gamma: Mode 1

I'm sure the profile won't be perfect, but it should be a massive improvement.

lol sorry yes you did include a txt, for some reason I extracted it into the same directory as your previous ICC upload and thought the .txt was from last time, My bad.

This actually looks pretty good so far, Thanks.

how do you setup this icc profile? My monitor seems to bleed when it comes to blacks

I'm not sure about other operating systems, but this is what to do in Windows 7 to install the profile that I uploaded. Change your monitor settings to the ones that I posted and place the ICM file in this directory: \Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color. Open the Control Panel and search for "color management." Open Color Management and click on the Advanced tab. Click "Change System Defaults..." Select the 2333T if you are using multiple displays. Click "Add.." and select the profile. Set as default.

After watching some The Office in HD using MechanicMan's latest ICC I noticed the gamma is a little to high on my monitor, so darker scenes tend to be over bright (washed out shadow details?) I bet it looks fine on his monitor its just each unit is going to need its own calibration to look right.

It could also have to do with the video card differences but not 100% on that, my video card gamma, brightness etc. settings in nvidia control panel are all at default settings.

I used the Lagom test to target a gamma of ~2.2. The gamma and/or "brightness" may vary on different systems with different video cards. What gamma value do you see using the Lagom test? If it is around 2.0 or 2.1, then you may be able to get good results by just changing the monitor's gamma setting to mode 2 or 3.

Gamma mode 2 puts the gamma around 2.2 with your profile and monitor RGB values, the only issue is the Blue bar in the 48% column is sitting between 2.4 and 2.5 gamma.

Is anyone willing to provide a walkthrough on how to appropriately setup 72hz refresh? I've looked at both Rivatuner & Powerstrip to set the customer resolution, but I'm lost as to all the settings that have been provided in this thread.

Do you need to use a third party program to set it up? Or can you set a customer resolution just in Windows 7? Also, has there been a work-around in games?

Thanks for any help you can provide all. :)

Bump, anyone?

Are you using Nvidia or ATI? I know Rivatuner supports both... I don't own ATI myself but these are Nvidia instructions:

Open the Nvida control panel and under Display click Change resolution, then Customize, Create Custom Resolution, type in 72 in the Refresh Rate box then click Timing, Where it says "Standard" change it from Automatic to Manual and then enter the values (You don't have to worry about the the Horizontal & Vertical "Back Porch" values with Nvidia so skip those).

Click Test and then click Ok to save the custom resolution.

You can also confirm the refresh rate by opening the monitors on screen menu and selecting Information.

I had some issues with 76Hz which seems to be related to me running dual monitors but havent confirmed 100% yet, personally I use 72Hz but feel free to try 76Hz as well.

Unfortunately I'm not sure why some games ignore the custom resolution which reverts it back to 60hz until you exit the game. But the games ive been playing recently all run @ 72hz without issue (Minecraft / Alice Madness Returns / Audiosurf / Magicka).

72Hz:
Horizontal Active: 1920
Horizontal Front Porch: 30
Horizontal Sync Width: 40
Horizontal Back Porch: 45
Horizontal Total: 2035
Horizontal Sync: +

Vertical Active: 1080
Vertical Front Porch: 3
Vertical Sync Width: 4
Vertical Back Porch: 5
Vertical Total: 1092
Vertical Sync: +

Here's a screenshot of what it should look like @ 72Hz:

EDIT: Just noticed your using ATI (in your signature), Hopefully another ATI user can help out.

for ati you need to download powerstrip and every value is named differently (you have to guess a little)

Thanks for the help, guys! Well, that helped partially. The settings put me @ 67Hz, if I adjust the refresh rate manually after setting the Porch & Width settings, it won't work either.

Is there anything else I need to set in Powerstrip to get this to display 72/76Hz?

Thanks in advance! :)

EDIT: It appears to be that the DVI port on the ATI card is single-link and not able to produce 72Hz over it. According to a poster with the same issue as me, earlier in this thread. :/

yes the single-link-dvi ports on ati cards seem to be some super-cheap chinese crap
its the reason i returned my sapphire flex

I don't know if this will help much, but here's a way to input resolutions manually on ATI / AMD cards without the use of powerstrip.

ATI / AMD Custom Resolutions (Non-EDID Method)

Have been following this thread closely- first got a 2333T from J&R in April which was very good when calibrated but developed a couple of dark pixels during the last month. Tried to get a new one through Staples (because apparently Samsung no longer does exchanges and wants to send the monitor to 'Amkotron' to repair : this place has horrible reviews on the web with monitors being returned scratched and broken) but the four that they sent all had issues: first one had a red pixel in the center of the screeen, second one had two bright i.e. white pixels clearly visible, third one had the bezel broken (thanks UPS) and the fourth had the left side considerably darker than the right.

Needless to say, I returned all the ones from Staples and sold my original. Now back on my Samsung 2333 HD, which while being a good TN, no longer suffices once I've seen the awesome color on the 2333T.

Ordered the AMVA Asus ML249H from amazon: hoping that works out (will post a review when I get it next week), else it looks like the Dell U2412 might be it based on the reviews here.

Based on the reviews on amazon and elsewhere, I am hoping the prad.de review unit was a lemon. We'll see: at least amazon has a no hassle return policy if there are issues.

Given the past variances in individual samples of the same monitor (esp the Dell 2408/2410 and the Samsung 2333T), one unit does not represent the monitor series.

Is this monitor really that bad for gaming? I have a cheap Acer monitor and got used to the slower response time.

Judging from the F2380 review, it's pretty similar:

Bad part about the 2333T there doesnt seem to be any difference between Normal / Faster / Fastest, I can easily see the difference when going through them on my PX2370. But at least the 2333T doesn't have any input lag issues so it can certainly be used for gaming if you can handle the ghosting.

is this monitor discontinued now? tiger direct and micro center used to sell it but they don't have it anymore

I ordered a refurb from Buy.com (Legendmicro) last week. Will be getting it today, so I can't wait to see the UPS man.

Yes, seems to be. I've had one on backorder (in Europe) for about 2 months.. no sign of any stock still.

I also placed an order with overstock.com (refurb) and will be getting it today also.

I have had this monitor for the past 3 weeks and I am happy with it. there is a slight hum but it is not noticeable most of the time. if it gets worse I have to return but at this price $120 I really can't complain. Now I am trying some of the settings offered here. Is the 72hz mainly for gaming/movie purposes?
