Safest gpu for the Akitio Node?

Yes I’m trying to use an external monitor.
Back to beating the bushes for an answer why I can’t get the GPU to show up on the device manager.
Tried disabling the internal GPUs but nope...

Yes I’ve done that and have the Thunderbolt icon on my desk top but can’t seem to find the app which I assume gives you the info posted above.
 
Did you try updating the BIOS on your laptop? That could help.

Also, is the Thunderbolt software installed? If you type into the Start menu "thunderbolt" does anything show up?
 
Yes updated Bios.
Thunderbolt software is installed and the icon is on the desktop.
It does show it's there in the apps in the Settings.
It’s running the eGPU. When it boots up the Thunderbolt does have a window that comes up saying that the PC may need an update.
 
I copied the Thunderbolt icon to the startup per these instructions and it now shows:
To change which apps run at startup, press and hold (or right-click) the Start  button, select Task Manager, and then select the Startup tab. Choose an app, then select Enable or Disable.


To add or remove an app from the Startup tab, press the Windows Logo Key  + R, type shell:startup, and then select OK. This opens the Startup folder. Select Start . Find the app you're looking to add or remove, and press and hold (or right-click) it. Select More > Open File Location. In the file location folder, press and hold (or right-click) the app and select Copy. Paste the shortcut to your app into the Startup folder to have it run at startup.
 
...and rebooted, no change at all, no GTX1660ti in device mgr...no windowas on right click pop up on the Thunderbolt icon.
 
looking into the Thunderbolt app evidently downloadable but of course there is a problem with that too...
 
O.K., finally found some of those windows but they are under the carot ^ menu...shows you how little I know about this stuff.

One other thing, you do have the power cable for the GPU connected, right?

There should be one 8-pin connector I believe.
 
Yes it’s connected all 8 pins. The GPU is running, fans turning.
Akitio has lights and fans running.
 
Seems like driver installation is the issue. I would disconnect your laptop from the internet, use DDU to completely remove any and all NVIDIA drivers from the laptop, and then run the desktop driver installation package first. If you verify that the eGPU is working then I would move onto getting the mGPU working.
 
Hmmm...appreciate that but that's scary.
What happens when you remove all the drivers? Won't you get a black screen or do you use the DDU and then install the new Nvidia drivers at the same time?
Man this is getting more complicated. I'm reticent to do anything over my head as this is our family PC we use for everything.
 
So reading this, would I just delete the Nvidia drivers/folders? The laptop has the Intel GPU and the second Nvidia 960M gpu.
 
DDU handles the uninstall for you. You should not just go deleting files, that could cause problems.

The machine will still display graphics, Windows has default drivers that will work for basic resolutions.

I'll give the DDU a try this evening and report back. So I should just dlete the Nvidia files, not the Intel files. That correct?
 
You should not delete any files manually.

Use DDU in Safe Mode and remove all video drivers (there is a drop down, you can select Nvidia, click remove and don't restart, then do Intel too).

Just a note.
Since this is a laptop with an external monitor at home we use, I assume the egpu will be the only active gpu if I delete the Intel gpu. Is that about right?
I do travel once or twice a year with the laptop and will carry the egpu with but not the external monitor.
If this DDU experiment works, will I still be able to use the laptop without the external monitor?
 
Yeah, Windows will install default drivers for your on-board graphics card even if you remove everything.

It's just to test to see if you can get the box working.
 
Sorry one more question. The DDU instructions are great. But I want to be sure.
Since I am adding the new GTX1660ti card do I choose the 'installing a new graphics card' option?

I can see the 1660ti now, it's all working!!!
Some said it wasn't possible...and now a miracle has happened....

Actually all 3 GPUs show in the device manager. But I don’t think I’ll do anything else like update the 960M driver.
I guess it just sits there dormant.
Anyhow the laptop screen works without the Akitio on, so that’s good
 
Houston we have a problem...guess I spoke too soon.
So, I fired up Assassins Creed Origins in higher settings. It looked good at 1080. So I tried for kicks 1440 and evidently it did not like that,
AC crashed to desktop. Itried booting up AC again and got to the graphic settings and switched to 1080 and crashed again.

Checked the device Manager and the gtx1660ti no longer showed up...
Tried rebooting. Tried loading the 1660 driver. Tried re-doing the DDU and driver.
Thunderbolt menu is showing this and Device 'Manager Microsoft Basic Adapter' ...

Now 5 minutes after I posted the above, the DM shows the1660 but with a triangle icon, not sure what that means..
