Safe/normal temperatures for a 6950

I am using a stock Gigabyte 6950, not using any overclocking or fan controls. When I play dirt 2 on max, 1920x1080 the temperatures in the ccc have been about 80c. That seems a little high up from my sometimes below 40c idling. Is this safe? I am just really ocd about my components, I know it's not my I7 causing the heat, it usually runs under 40c because of my H70.

I have HD6970s in CF, when I use only one card the temperature ranges from mid 70s to high 80s depending on how taxing the game is.

Your temperature is fine.

80c is definitely safe. A little hot for being a single card but nothing wrong with it getting to those temps.

As a general rule of thumb on current high end cards any temperature under 90C should not be a concern.

If it isn't running at 90C, slow the fan down.
Keep tweaking until it peaks 90C. :p

+1. I happily sacrifice cooling performance for quietness when I know it does no harm. Many people think the 6970's stock fan profile is too weak, I actually think it's too strong. Even with my side fans off the temps on my 6970s are very respectable. A lot of it has to do with having a slot space between the cards.

For some reason Dirt 2 is really taxing, l4d2 is under 70C usually.

I played Rift this past weekend for like 18 straight hours and finally cracked the 70°C barrier with my 6970s, lol.

Not checked in a properly demanding game yet. My 6970s load up at 530W total (ac draw including everything else), in Heroes of Newerth I see about 430W, and the cards run at 71C. Not bad considering their fan speed is pretty low and my case side fans are switched off.
