S24A850D: Really high lag/ghosting..?

Hey guys,

I've been looking to replace my old H-IPS HP LP2475w, and after much research and deliberation, I decided to take my chances with the backlight bleed of the Samsung 850D series and picked up a 24". To my great happiness, there wasn't much backlight bleed at all on the monitor I got (construction date, Aug.2012) and the colours and AG coating are definitely a step above the 2475, but I noticed that if I don't set the 850D to "fastest" overdrive (which creates overshoot) the monitor appears to "ghost" rather badly. I don't know if I'm using that term 100% currently, but basically, moving objects appear as images behind images. It seems really specific too...for eg. in Far Cry 3 is seems pretty comparable to the 2475 even on "faster", but in Starcraft 2, when a unit moves it appears like it's gittering, as if it has no hard edge. It actually gives me head-aches to look at. It's not just one game though, it happens in MechWarrior Online as well, and in movies.

I don't know if I'm just so used to one monitor, using another will take time to adjust too...or if this is just how monitors look now (I've been using the H-IPS for 4+ years. The 2475 is from 2008) or if I should send this back. Reading reviews for the 27a850d, all reviews say the monitor looks perfect on "faster", and I'm like "wut..!?"

The thing that really gets me, is that response time for the 850D is twice as fast, even on "normal" and "faster" than the 2475w, and my 2475w produces much sharper motion.

Anyways, just wondering what others think, or if I can get some help from other 850D owners. I don't want to send it back and pay a restocking fee if all new IPS/PLS panels look like this, and it's just something I have to get used too.

Are you using the native resolution (1920x1200).

Are you using DVI input?

The PLS technology is basically the same as IPS, so they should really not differ that much.

I'm using DVI. I've read that sometimes using DVI-D vs DVI-I can make a difference so ill try some different cables when I get home...

but yea...I know they are essentially the same...but I don't know if an H-IPS with an LCD light is different than a PLS/H-IPS screen with an LED light...the only other LED I have is a TN.

The LED shouldn't make any difference to the lag, it is only the technology used by the light behind the LCD panel.

In TFT centrals test the HP had 25ms lag average (input lag) measured before the days of SMTT 2.

Question is, would you describe the lag as

1) you move the mouse and the screen smears things as you move the mouse

2) you move the mouse and after you start moving it, there is a pause between when you move mouse and the screen moves.

The first is down to pixel response and FPS, the 2nd is down to input lag.

The FPS shouldn't be the problem as the screens have the same resolution.

DVI-D is a pure digital connection -I is analog and digital. If you use DVI input with a DVI-I it will be digital anyway. So as long as you are using DVI input, you will be fine. The DVI cable will be fine if it is also single link, or dual link. You are not reaching the bandwidth limit of SL cable either.

Hope some of that made sense.

It's not 2. It's sort of 3, although I wouldn't descibe it as a "smear"....more like severe ghosting...units in starcraft 2 kind of blur when they move....it's gives me headaches cause it makes my eyes think they aren't focused...if that makes sense.

Can you give a bit more detail about it and let us know if a moving object leaves a trail of same color behind, or a trail of another color?
People often do the mistake to call this ghosting(I have been doing this mistake myself) when the truth is that those unpleasant behaviors can come from different sources:

1. Motion Blur: When a moving object leaves behind a trail of the same color as the last line of the object.
2. Overshot: When a moving object leaves behind a trail of a different color: this is a result of artifacts that try to reduce motion blur in an aggressive manner.
3. Ghosting: is a combination between motion blur and low fps. Am I correct on this one? Is just like you would get motion blur but jumping more pixels at a time.

The most annoying thing at a monitor is motion blur, which was a big problem from day 1, and most people are very sensitive to this issue especially during gaming.

Yes, sorry, after doing some research today, it appears what I mean is motion blur. My panel is some rather intense motion blur, that can't be solved without setting the overdrive to the highest, at which point it noticeably overshoots.

I'm not sure what to do...PLS and AH-IPS are supposed to be roughly the same thing. I was considering purchasing a Dell U2413, comparing it to the 850D and sending back which ever I didn't like (assuming one was any different than the other...which it may not be), but reading reviews and impressions online, it sounds like they all perform in roughly the same fashion. It seems like the only panel suitable for gaming is now TN's, or the old H-IPS's??...and the H-IPS's (LP2475w, U2410, PA246Q) are all literally the same product.
