In MOST games / IPC tests, clock for clock , intel is only 3 to 5% ahead of AM's Zen+ in IPC when tested at identical clocks speeds . The rest of Intel's gains is thru brute force core clock speed (nealy 1000 Mhz above AMD) So, if the Ryzen 2 has a 15% increase in IPC, combined with the higher core clocks, it will be neck and neck with Intel's offering, and possibly slightly ahead, not ~5% behind.

Are chiplets better at spreading heat out vs having all the cores on one die?

Of course, more area to spread the heat out. I don't have much faith in chip stacking like Intel's Foveros technology, consequently.

    Nah.

Intel makes you upgrade to new motherboards every other generation. PERIOD.

I'm hoped we finally see some good matx motherboards with the x570. I haven't really been enamored with any Ryzen matx motherboards yet.

I just hope we don't have to wait forever for a decent matx offering.

Agreed. The vast majority of people will be compatible with Zen 2. 95% of enthusiasts are 1) using either an b350/b450 or x370/x470 board and 2) will be in the market for a Ryzen 5 or 7 i.e. not Ryzen 9. So, they only way you're not compatible with Zen 2 is if you are on the ultra low-end, or ultra high-end. Cutting edge stuff always comes at a cost for the chip AND platform upgrades.

Intel makes you upgrade with every tick-tock no matter what.

Check out the b450-i from Asus. Solid, great features, excellent sound and much stronger build.. Wi-Fi is 30% quicker and overall board far superior to the msi b450-i. I think Asus updated it the be vrms are decent and better than their earlier 350/450 efforts.

I've actually been firmly in the itx camp for a long time now, but I also still have nostalgia for my old Asus Rog Maximus VII Gene. But every time I've looked, theres not really anything interesting for matx and AM4.

I'm just hoping with more AMD success that we will get more motherboards. When you look at Intel vs. AMD most of the really high end boards are not made for for AM4. Not to mention a very limited supply of ITX, M-ATX etc.

I'm not ocing it but if I had to run an itx long term this is definitely the board I'd run.
It's like a mini maximus and has a lot of oc options. Give it a try I'm quite sure you won't be disappointed. It's also getting zen2 support confirmed.

It's just the b450 I with few extra features. Msi doesn't apply fan profiles on boot and the software is just sub par imo. Not a bad board but after using their stuff for a while now I'm Not going to trynsave the small amount of. Cost difference between an Asus board.
Vrms are the weak point on itx.

Just came back from a conference to a no post b450i rog. Bathtub curve got me gaddang. See how quick mind factory is now... Got an optional priority and stock replacement service when ordering and it's about to pay dividends.

Store leaks indicate the 3700X has a turbo of 5GHZ. Looks like ATV was right.

They are not engineering samples. They are qualification samples. I explained the difference here

The source doesn't mention IPC. It only says the new CPUs are on average 15% faster.

Engineering samples are sure to be lower spec than shipping silicon. I imagine higher bine dies are being accumulated for server and performance platforms. Yields and performance will improve as the process is dialed in. X570 should be up to par by the time of launch. Might be some signaling issues that are corrected with revisions of the chipset/boards. New spec bound to have some birthing pains at first. Exciting times for AMD.

I would really like to be able to drop a 16 core into my asus prime pro x370. This would be a fantastic upgrade. Please AMD come through again!

All the retail leaks I’ve seen copy Adorded’s leak almost word for word. So either he was right or those leaks were just outright copying what Jim said and repeating it.

The Forza Horizon 4 demo on Zen 2/Radeon VII that AMD shows at CES...

If you look at the car's license plate, it said "RVIIONR7"

That stands for Radeon VII on Ryzen 7.

So that's a hint right there that the 8-core Zen 2 engineering sample is a Ryzen 7.

Can't wait. Will be replacing my 2700X with this if so. Not sure if the 2700X is bottlenecking my 2080TI in some instances.

Will most likely be my last upgrade until DDR5 RAM comes out.

Personally would be a bit disappointed with that. Would have hoped for slightly higher clocks on the 8C/16T part. Was hoping that would be the sweet spot for gamers.

Better be slightly pessimistic than overly optimistic so you don't get disappointed in the end :p I'd say my estimations fall somewhere in-between the most optimistic 5.0~5.1GHz boost clocks and most pessimistic predictions around ~4.4GHz. Would love to see those rumors about 5.0GHz 12C 3700X being true, that would be my next CPU if both IPC advantage of say ~10%(+) vs previous gen + those clocks, I'd even consider swapping out my 8600K which isn't the best for heavily multitasking use or video rendering that I do a fair bit of. Not to mention such a poor OC sample (4.75GHz at like 1.325v). I was originally hoping for price dropped 9700K but since Intel has kept the price the same since launch whit no interest whatsoever of dropping it and the security issues and the mobo lock game they've been excercising I'm kind of feeling I'm done with all that as long as AMD can at least provide equal performance in single threads.

I think it's quite possible that the 3600X will be held back slightly clock wise in order to push sales for the higher binned & expensier SKUs even if it's lower amount cores, ofc that might make it favorable for overclockers but seems like AMD is using pretty tight binning these days anyway so I don't expect too much there. Besides you gotta keep the pricing realistic for what you get, the leaked price rumors were even slightly more favorable than my prediction for lower SKUs which when you factor it all in, it just seems too good to be true or Intel would have to do some major price cuts soon which isn't realistic to expect either.

    Let me say this:

If the performance is really as good as you hope it to be, the price wouldn't be.

    Don't delude yourself.
