RX 7600, No Display Output?

Hey everyone,

I guess I am trying to figure out if I got scammed (or sold a defective GPU) or if these cars have some issues where they are very picky about screens and/or system compatibility.

I picked up this RX 7600 on eBay to use as a video card in my workstation.

The workstation is not ready to be transitioned to use it yet, so I figured I should test the video card first to make sure it works.

I've stuck this card in two different systems to no avail.

System 1: My testbench build. Old Supermicro Ivy bridge server board.

Result: GPU briefly shows boot splash screen, but refuses to show BIOS screen or any other VESA text mode output, and never gives any image in OS.

System 2: My old Desktop board from a few years back x79 Sandy Bridge-E board.

Result: Even worse than the first system. I have not been able to coax the board to give me any display output at all. POST, pre-OS or OS, in either Linux or Windows.

Now, if I install it as a secondary GPU, I can boot into Linux, and Linux appears to load all of the AMDGPU drivers and everything looks like it should. It identifies the proper card, the right amount of RAM, etc. etc., but it just does not give me any display output.

Now, it is not lost on me that both of the systems I have available to me for testing right now (without tearing into my workstation, which I can't do right now) are pretty old.

I'm thinking there might be some issue here related tot the age of these systems. Both have UEFI, but neither have resizeable BAR support, for instance, and they also only have PCIe Gen 3.

Also, the monitors I am testing on are not necessarily the newest. The first was an older 1680x1050 HP screen. This one only has DVI and VGA inputs, so I tested with a passive HDMI to DVI adapter. Second was a Dell U2412M. That one at least has 1080p, and I was able to test with both Displayport and HDMI to DVI adapters, to no avail.


I did some googling, and I have found a bunch of posts with others who have had similar issues with display output on 7600 cards.

I guess my question is, are these known to be finicky with older systems? Or maybe with older monitors?

Or was I maybe scammed or sold a bad card?

I'm used to PCIe video cards just working in any system with a PCIe slot and with any screen, but maybe these are more finicky?

Unfortunately I got busy when this thing first arrived, so I didn't get around to testing it within the first 30 days, so I am out of eBay's buyer protection period...

I appreciate any input or knowledge anyone may have about these.
 
To follow up on this.

I buckled, because I needed to know, and broke into my water loop on my current system and pulled the 4090 out, and stuck the RX 7600 in, and it works beautifully without any issues.

So, if anyone else comes across this in the future, I guess I can answer my questions above myself.

Yes, there is something about the RX 7600 that makes it not happy on older Intel systems. I tried it on two different motherboards (Sandy Bridge era x79 Workstation and Ivy Bridge era Server) and neither worked at all.

In my TRX40 Threadripper board it works beautifully - however.

I'm not sure exactly what the cause is, but I bet it has something to do with motherboard UEFI revision. That is my best guess.
 
Total stab in the dark here... UEFI boards, especially older ones, have a compatibility mode to deal with cards expecting a legacy BIOS. I'm pretty sure it's called CSM. The boards I've had allow you to turn it off. You might try toggling that setting.

Interesting. I always only thought of CSM as supporting boot modes, not compatibility with video cards. I wouldn't have thought to try that.

At this point - however - I'll never know. The only reason for sticking it in those old systems was just to test it to make sure it was working, without having to break down my workstation before I was ready.

Now that I have stuck it in the workstation early, it is just going to stay there.
