The speculation is that these are using old drivers that use the chip like Tonga 380/x... Not utilizing the extra 257 shaders or Polaris Arch changes.
No one is claiming that updated drivers dont exist, just that they havent been released to the public yet.
And the driver stuff is just speculation. Seems to be based on the minimal Witcher 3 improvements from the 380x, which can be attributed to the higher clocks and more vram... We will see.
most benchmarks seem to put the 380x in the 50-60fps range at 1080 all maxed (but hairworks).Does a 380x performance anything like this?

60-70fps would seem correct with the clock boost and extra vram, not utilizing the 257 shaders or Polaris arch changes.
example:
But its just speculation... Im just suggesting that these videos should come with a disclaimer, as they could be very misleading while being assumed as accurate.
What do you mean not utilizing 257 shaders ?
i.e. the drivers would 'unlock' the unused shaders, like 6950>6970, 290>290x, Fury>FuryX....What do you mean not utilizing 257 shaders ?
i.e. the drivers would 'unlock' the unused shaders, like 6950>6970, 290>290x, Fury>FuryX....
I know those were bios mods that unlocked those shaders on those cards, but the point being is that the card could have parts of it being unused right now.
There is no technical knowledge that leads to this reasoning... its simply that the performance increase from 380x>480 can be explained by clock bumps alone. Makes it look like the extra shaders and arch changes arent being used.
I think drivers are 100%, just not released to the public yet.
Either way, the 380x>480 performance increase is attributable to the 25% clock boost. If no other gains are made, it would be quite a shock to everyone I think. That should be where the 470 is at...
As others have said. I will wait for real reviews, from multiple providers.... In the mean time, I would say that this deserves a heavy disclaimer that it may not be accurate at all, as some people may see this as accurate without one.
From what I can tell the 380x runs quite a bit worse than this https://tpucdn.com/reviews/ASUS/R9_380X_Strix/images/witcher3_1920_1080.png
Sure, that's probably at Ultra. But going from high/ultra to all Ultra won't halve your fps.
Its one of the reasons I have come to enjoy Digital Foundries reviews... They show the game sequence they use to review all the cards equally, and include a live running chart of all cards that shows the ups and downs of each scene/area as a video of it plays... And they typically spend some time going through as many different scenes/areas as possible, to give the full spectrum.tons of variation in the results because there isn't a standard area for testing it seems
That link also shows a 970 at 38fps... and a 390x at 36fps... ???
I'm not sure how accurate that is
Review video deserves disclaimer.
Just in! 480 almost 2x faster than 390x, according to the video and link that ledra has provided in this threadhehe
This poor guy is receiving so much unnecessary hate from AMD fanboys in the comments section of his RX480 videos. I guess they expected much more out of the 480 than they see lol.
blame the guy making the videos! lol
Most of the leaks are running on 16.5.2 driver version. If you take Tonga, double the ROPS, add 256 cores, clock it about 25% higher, and add a small boost due to a faster cache, the leaks basically reflect that.
Why would production drivers out in public have beta driver code for an unreleased product? It just doesn't go in the build. There is no optimization or hardware support for Polaris right now in the leaks, since the reviewers just got that missing code in the new press drivers less than 24 hours ago.
I just don't see an AMD developer leaking it. And since all the leaks are right around the same level, differing in 1080 base vs 1266 boost clocks it seems, it is even more unlikely that one guy leaked it to multiple people with different builds. Occam's Razor, 480 drivers didn't leak.
What it does not reflect is literally any of the new logic hardware in Polaris.
RX 480 - all leaks have been done with drivers that are falling back to Tonga. RAM chips same as 1070. • /r/Amd
jamesgalb
Seriously jamesgalb ? You got this from reddit, with no source whatsoever, just conjecture by some guy who can't accept that the 480 isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread... Also, he doesn't say some of the CU are unused...
Not only did you pretend you thought of this yourself, you even twisted this speculation to better suit your narrative ... He does not claim there are unused CUs
This is "the proof" for these claims
The speculation is that these are using old drivers that use the chip like Tonga 380/x... Not utilizing the extra 257 shaders or Polaris Arch changes.
...?
"The speculation"
SPECULATION.
Not MY speculation, but THE speculation. The stuff I read, and obviously didnt think up, otherwise I would have said "My Speculation", or "My Opinion", or "I did the Maths", or something else.
Not once did I offer it as proof. I said since post 1 (here and in the other thread) that there is SPECULATION that these could be old drivers, and it is logically supported by performance boosts only reflecting the clock increases.

It is reasoning. Whether it be someone on reddits reasoning, or my own, it is still reasoning, just the same as your reasoning is reasoning. And are you trying to imply that all reasoning/conclusions must be 100% original and exclusive, otherwise you are not welcome to them? I disagree with the guy on reddit anyways. If it were using the shaders, I think it would have better results.
Your video is not proven to reflect accurate results of the 480, and with no context it appears you are trying to promote it as though it does... No worries, I will be your disclaimer. I think all are aware now.
Your speculation regarding drivers and performance is not proven to reflect reality, additionally it is not YOUR speculation, but that of some guy on reddit.
Having said that, do you have any evidence at all to support your claim that the extra 4CUs are not being used? Do you have a 380x benchmark in the same scene? Have you normalized wrt 380x clocks and compared? Have you found that the 480 doesn't perform roughly 15% higher (as it should at clock parity with 256 more shaders)
I wait with baited breath.
the reasoning blaming the drivers it's just stupid in my opinion, if the card isn't performing in a game then it shouldn't be performing any good too in any synth benchmark or any other application and should just perform a bit better than tonga.. but no, we have leaks with the card outperforming GTX 980/R9 390X. i don't bite that thing about drivers.the guy in reddit is smoking a very very green herb.. "This alone puts the card at Fury X." ROFLMAO.

Both of you are wrong.Let's wait and see. How about that? We have jamesgalb hyping the product and you playing it down. Honestly hope it performs well because competition is what we need.
hahaha, it makes me laugh too. best. title. ever.Sorry leldra, didn't mean it seriously. Just pointing out opposites. But looking at your title did make me laugh when you replied.
How about we dont use leaks in either direction? And wait like a couple days and look at confirmed benchmarks? Sound good? Great.I'm not playing it down! I'm just basing all my talk on the actual leaks. When I said that the AotS multi-gpu demo leaves a single RX480 at 34 fps, 20% slower than a 390X jamesglob here said I was wrong, I didn't understand the scaling, that it was speculative, wasn't confirmed, basically he threw EVERYTHING he could muster at me to try and invalidate the result. It doesn't matter how legit the leaks are, he is going to be in denial until the last possible second. He was willing to claim that GPU scaling was at 51% to try and "save" the rx480. This guy should compete in the olympics; mental gymnastics.
I could be wrong, maybe the drivers are pre-release, I never claimed otherwise, the videos don't specify which driver is used, but I can tell you WITH CERTAINTY that all 2304 ALUs are being used, because drivers don't work that way
