RX 480 Witcher 3 Testing

The speculation is that these are using old drivers that use the chip like Tonga 380/x... Not utilizing the extra 257 shaders or Polaris Arch changes.

No one is claiming that updated drivers dont exist, just that they havent been released to the public yet.

And the driver stuff is just speculation. Seems to be based on the minimal Witcher 3 improvements from the 380x, which can be attributed to the higher clocks and more vram... We will see.

That's what I read also. Seems that AMD just revised them last night for video card review websites only. The new drivers turn on the new features that these cards have.

most benchmarks seem to put the 380x in the 50-60fps range at 1080 all maxed (but hairworks).

60-70fps would seem correct with the clock boost and extra vram, not utilizing the 257 shaders or Polaris arch changes.

i.e. the drivers would 'unlock' the unused shaders, like 6950>6970, 290>290x, Fury>FuryX....

I know those were bios mods that unlocked those shaders on those cards, but the point being is that the card could have parts of it being unused right now.

There is no technical knowledge that leads to this reasoning... its simply that the performance increase from 380x>480 can be explained by clock bumps alone. Makes it look like the extra shaders and arch changes arent being used.

I don't think that's how it works. I know a guy with a Fury X who installed drivers as if it was a 7970 to get better performance at launch, it didn't disable 50% of his shaders. I've also heard claims that some Polaris features aren't working in drivers, but I've also read claims that not only are they working, that they have been tested; like primitive discard.

I dunno. I think drivers should be working at 100% very very soon if not already

Sure, that's probably at Ultra. But going from high/ultra to all Ultra won't halve your fps.

Its one of the reasons I have come to enjoy Digital Foundries reviews... They show the game sequence they use to review all the cards equally, and include a live running chart of all cards that shows the ups and downs of each scene/area as a video of it plays... And they typically spend some time going through as many different scenes/areas as possible, to give the full spectrum.
 
That link also shows a 970 at 38fps... and a 390x at 36fps... ???

I'm not sure how accurate that is :p

all i am concerned about is if it will have the same coil whine issues as fiji did
 
if you go to that yt page they also have cs:go, gta5, doom and overwatch videos. all run really good, at least imho.
 
This poor guy is receiving so much unnecessary hate from AMD fanboys in the comments section of his RX480 videos. I guess they expected much more out of the 480 than they see lol.

Most of the leaks are running on 16.5.2 driver version. If you take Tonga, double the ROPS, add 256 cores, clock it about 25% higher, and add a small boost due to a faster cache, the leaks basically reflect that.

Why would production drivers out in public have beta driver code for an unreleased product? It just doesn't go in the build. There is no optimization or hardware support for Polaris right now in the leaks, since the reviewers just got that missing code in the new press drivers less than 24 hours ago.

I just don't see an AMD developer leaking it. And since all the leaks are right around the same level, differing in 1080 base vs 1266 boost clocks it seems, it is even more unlikely that one guy leaked it to multiple people with different builds. Occam's Razor, 480 drivers didn't leak.

At the end of the day, your 'benchmarks' should come with a disclaimer that they are pre-NDA and are not proven to be accurate, since otherwise it looks like you are posting them with no context because they are accurate.

First of all, it ain't reasoning if you read it on reddit, with no source or hard evidence whatsoever.

Second, the guy doesn't even claim that the shaders are going unused, only that the Polaris specific (new) features like PDA are being unused.

Having said that, do you have any evidence at all to support your claim that the extra 4CUs are not being used? Do you have a 380x benchmark in the same scene? Have you normalized wrt 380x clocks and compared? Have you found that the 480 doesn't perform roughly 15% higher (as it should at clock parity with 256 more shaders)

Nope, thats why I said it was speculation in practically every post, including the first. And in none of them did I claim it to be my own (although mine does differ)...

Just as I disclaimer my speculation, you should atleast add context to the videos you post. They are pre-NDA and not yet proven to be accurate.. Dont worry though, as I said early, if you dont do it I will do it for you. You are welcome :)

Yeah, AotS performance probably also due to AMD themselves not having access to release drivers, all part of some master plan to surprise everyone come launch day /s

I'm not playing it down! I'm just basing all my talk on the actual leaks. When I said that the AotS multi-gpu demo leaves a single RX480 at 34 fps, 20% slower than a 390X jamesglob here said I was wrong, I didn't understand the scaling, that it was speculative, wasn't confirmed, basically he threw EVERYTHING he could muster at me to try and invalidate the result. It doesn't matter how legit the leaks are, he is going to be in denial until the last possible second. He was willing to claim that GPU scaling was at 51% to try and "save" the rx480. This guy should compete in the olympics; mental gymnastics.

I could be wrong, maybe the drivers are pre-release, I never claimed otherwise, the videos don't specify which driver is used, but I can tell you WITH CERTAINTY that all 2304 ALUs are being used, because drivers don't work that way
