if I intend to use only a single 8800GTX card, is there really any performance advantage in going with the 680i or 650i setup as opposed to the Intel 975x?

I fully understand that running the 8800GTXs in SLI mode is ideal, and it is a nice upgrading option to have, but really, what is the extent of the performance difference?

Single card (real world performance is probably different)

Memory Bandwidth: 86.4 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 73600 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 13800 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 18400 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 18400 MVertices/sec

in SLI (theoretical)

Memory Bandwidth: 172.8 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 147200 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 27600 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 36800 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 36800 MVertices/sec

question is... is it worth the extra $$$?

Without real world results (or even benchmarks), the stats don't mean anything. You'll never see a real world result or benchmark doubling the performance with SLI. Usually you get around 60-70% at best but with higher IQ than before.

well what I was really getting at guys was whether or not their is a graphics performance difference in the 680i chipset as opposed to Intel's 975x. I'm just trying to decipher the advantages of going with the 680i over Intel's conventional 975x....

You're not going to notice a big difference. I'm putting a 8800GTX in my 975X board and I didn't even think about it performing any better on the 680i FWIW.
