Running an NV 780 without cooling for a while...

I'm building a new computer and have all the parts *except* for some tubing which I am missing for my watercooling loop. It should arrive in a few days.

The 780 I have is the EVGA Hydro Copper. It has a heat sink on it, but no fan.

I was wondering if it was alright to install it in the PC, install and Boot Windows, and to use the machine for moderate tasks (like installing software and browsing) until the tubing gets here and I can set up my loop properly

(I have a H220 AIO on the 4930k currently installed, stock speed, not pushing the machine for anything as yet).

I would STRONGLY recommend against that, the only reason that chunk of copper CAN cool is because of the water channeling through it, with out that, the block will simple heat up and disperse VERY little heat. Either wait or use an old GPU. Or even go to staples and get a cheapy gpu, install what you want, and return it.

Would you drive a car without brake pads?
Would you eat fries without cheese and gravy? :p
Would you then take a number 2 without toilet paper?

In all seriousness, while it might be "possible" I wouldn't risk it. Just stick in an older video card if you have one or use onboard video if available (isn't it?)

Don't.Do.It.Plz.

Just wait for the tubing to arrive, I wouldn't risk it.

It'll probably get hot as fuck, when my GTX 260s fan failed it was boiling water at the desktop. At 100c plus, youtube was enough to crash it.

Probably not a good idea. Why not use onboard?

Don't do it!

That said, I have booted a PC with a blocked card that had no loop and it didn't even get hot, but it was a known bad card and it was only on for about 10 seconds.

Thanks guys.

I was asking because I have a GT 610 that runs with a passively with just a heat sink, and on my laptop I have a Quadro 2000m that only gets hot and the fan going when 3D graphics are run, otherwise runs just cool as a cucumber.

I also once installed a 7800GT with no cooler (and without the added extra power plugged in, even) and it did just fine for a while.

No sweat. I'll just wait.

this is why I always get a mobo with onboard video output, so I can just go onboard if i'm doing a video card upgrade or waiting for some parts. Recently I sold my 7950 and bought a 290 (before the great markup era) and had to go with onboard for about a week while I waited. That or get a cheap $30 card and just keep it for times like this.

Hahaha. Running one of those monster cards without some active cooling is so risky. I once forgot to plug back in the fan on one of the 5870s I used to own and the moment I got to the desktop that card was approaching meltdown temps.

To the dude who asked to try it so that he could read the next thread...

Yes, I'll go and do that just for kicks. The money tree is my cousin.

I had my pump fail on me, and the PC was useable for about 10-15 minutes for LIGHT tasks. But I also liquid in the loop to further help conduct and absorb heat. Once temperatures started to hit 75-80C sustained on the CPU (that always got hotter more quickly than GPUs) I'd shut down the PC. The CPU water block was also burning to the touch, and the GPUs just warm.
