Runic missed the boat with Torchlight

Wabe... I don't think people play Torchlight expecting Bioshock or Assassin's Creed. It's ludicrous to even make the comparison. People didn't play Diablo 2 because it had a complex well thought out intricate system with a great plot and stunning graphics either.

Nope, but Diablo's presentation of the story was a lot more exciting than Torchlight.

I think Torchlight has its place and that comparisons to D2 just because of similar gameplay is a little harsh. The game is good singleplayer fun, and of course you knew that going in.. Needless to say, I am looking forward to the MP :D

Torchlight was a fantastic game for the short amount of time it went under development. Lets keep in mind the amount of time between diablo and diablo II. Not to mention budget, and team size.

I didn't buy Torchlight myself because of lack of multiplayer... that's what really drove home games like Diablo for me. For what it is it sounds good, but I'd rather (and did) buy Aquaria or GTA 4 on a steam sale for about the same price.

I bought Torchlight for $5. Its a great game that I play if I only have a short time to play and I just want something mindless. I love the art direction and I find the game charming in a simplistic sort of way.

And it was $5, I have paid much more for much worse games.

Um Runic has been vocal from the beginning that Torchlight is the single player game, and the sequel coming is a free MMO.

You missed out on the best action RPG dungeon crawler since D2.

It's not even about the dungeon crawling to me. It's not about the game itself, but the developers. If you want to mod Borderlands, and you go on the gearbox forums and ask about it, do you think Gearbox is there to help you? Hah! Now, head over to the torchlight forums and you'll find a full-featured tool to modify just about every piece of the game that isn't hard-coded. What's more, if you have trouble, the community is there to help you and the devs are active in it.

I like Torchlight for the same reason I like everything produced by Stardock.

I wish they would make a mod for the storage. I need more storage!!!

Back on topic yes they will miss the boat on this one. Im sure D3 will be out before they get done with this. Im sure they know already that if D3 is out before this their game will have a small select crowd. I on the other hand will try the mmo and pay 50-60 bucks for D3.

I would actually compare Torchlight more to Dungeon Siege 2 than any of the Diablo games.

Lack of multiplayer was a huge missed opportunity, and the enormous outcry they had to stifle on the official forums before and after launch was totally evidence of that.

Might as well go play dungeon crawl stone soup instead.

Yeah I agree. AoC comes to mind

Diablo 2 had more replay if you avidly sought out loot. (ie to complete a set) Sure it was an artificial length increase, but it worked for me. You could get stuff for your other characters too. I guess you need the same mentality to accept 360 Achievements and MMOs to an extent. (I don't like either, but I see their value)

I don't feel the need to play past the end in Torchlight despite the presence of after game levels. I would like to complete the set I have... but something about that game makes me feel like the loot isn't that great.

I was looking for a mindless button masher so Torchlight fit what I was looking for about as perfectly as possible. So did Plants vs. Zombies.

The only real complaint I had was that the ranged characters were a pain because I'd misclick and wade into battle/die, or else have to shift+click and move my hand off the quick keys--that's kind of a pain for me since I'm a lefty and use 6-0 far more often than 1-5. The melee guy was fun enough that it didn't affect me too badly, and I didn't spend any time trying to figure out how to remap the quick keys to the zxc... line.

Well, the regular price of Torchlight is 20$, it's like renting 4 bad movies, and that will keep you occupied for about 8 hours, or 4 hours if you went see those 2 bad movie at the cinema and that's 4 hours, so if you played 8 hours, well that's not bad

I also thought Torchlight was good for what it is...a small budget game.

I bought Titan quest during the steam sale, and since it supports MP, it was the closest thing I found to the Diablo games (having a blast with my cousin, like good old times).

Heh. For $5 I've got 30 hours of decent dungeon crawl already.....and I haven't even made it through all the levels to the "never-ending" one.

I must agree. I love the game, but the interaction with the developers only helps. Also the community for the most part on the forums just makes me want to play the MMO.

This is a quote from Bebop in a long well thought out thread about why the OP quit playing...
Wow that is one hell of a thread so far. Anyways thanks to everybody especially Jerich for this. Lots of things to think about and to be honest a lot of it we feel quite the same way about. All I can say is I have read it and I can pretty much say the entire office will be reading it soon enough( sent it out as an email ).

I can't remember the last game where you would see a post like this in an issue thread.
