Because even going back to 480 gtx, total FPS benefitted from having a discrete physx card to handle the effects.
I know that the 570 is basically the same as a 480 in terms of power.
I know a 670/680 is a step up, but how far up, I don't know personally.
Having a dedicated PhysX card is fine and can help by offloading the physics processing from the main video card with the few games that support it, BUT that card has to be one that is up to the task. The 8800 is likely just a bit too slow to keep up with your 670, and would likely hurt frame rates a bit on those PhysX supported games since the 670 would have to wait for the 8800 to finish its processing before drawing the frame.
