Channel sources confirm, nVidia flushing stock ahead of Kepler

November 6th, 2011 at 11:53 am - Authorfaith
Following up on recent rumours relating to the supply and sale of GeForce cards in the market, KitGuru spies have been sniffing around the channel and there’s a definite change in the smell of the sea air. KitGuru takes a bucket, spade and hand grenade along, just in case.

When nVidia’s GTX 480 and 580 cards launched, pricing was in the mid £400 region (well over $600 in taxes). Now the team at KFA2 has the Arctic-cooled Anarchy version of the GTX 580 on sale at a number of stores, like Novatech, for just £369.

Right now, we’re seeing a lot of traffic in the channel about nVidia price cuts – across the board.

Sure, the market has been tough/quiet, but this is a little more active than normal.

The reason is simple. Kepler.

nVidia believes that it has the new architecture ready, and has a strong suspicion that AMD won’t be ready with the re-vamped 7000 series until after Christmas, so maybe the Jen Hsun crew wants to push hard for a place in your Xmas stockings this December.

The most likely situation, would be for nVidia to (a) push out the world’s fastest graphic card and (b) use the promise of ‘something more from nVidia, but it is not here just yet’ to try and dissuade people from buying Radeons.

In the meantime, the bundle deals just keep on getting better, with Mafia and Batman options from nVidia partners and companies like Sapphire offering Battlefield 3 with some special cards.

Either way, it’s a great deal for customers. The flushing of old stock, ahead of the new launch, is an intelligent move from nVidia and one likely to create some genuine bargains.

The most interesting part of the fight for GPU supremacy, going forward, is that Microsoft’s lack of interest in pushing out a new DirectX with the next operating system (Windows 8 in mid 2012), means that the features fight will change. The ability to be ‘first with DX12′ would have been a significant driver for both AMD and nVidia, but that incentive no longer exists.

Right now, the people we’ve spoken to in the UK channel have confirmed that it ‘feels like nVidia is flushing the channel, ahead of a new launch’.

Well this is certainly surprising if true given that Nvidia has been especially quiet lately.

Tweaktown expanded on the article:

NVIDIA could do a few things here, launch the 600-series before Christmas and use the promise of 'something more from NVIDIA, but it is not here just yet', to try and grab a few of those GPU fans that were leaning toward a Radeon-flavored GPU, and keep them licking that sweet, green NVIDIA pie. Then we have the bundles NVIDIA are pumping out with partners, bundling games such as Mafia II and Batman: Arkham City - this is great, and it keeps customers coming back.

So even if Nvidia chooses not to launch Kepler before Christmas, its still a great time to get a good deal. :D

most interesing part of that article to me was the DX12 comment...

so no DX12 anytime soon?...so what's the point in upgrading from a GTX 580?...only makes sense for SLI users

huh? Does not compute. Why would it matter if you have sli or not? I would like better performance from a single card solution than what the gtx 580 provides.

Also, Driver/firmware image quality enhancements like soft AA are always welcome, not to mention Tessellation performance still isn't where I would want it. Remember how long DX9 lasted? Just because your Radeon 9800 XT ran DX9 didn't mean that the third-gen DX9 cards weren't worth a look.

Wow sweet! I really hope that this does bring something but I don't believe it will happen. For one, nvidia is selling really well, and they have the fastest single card solution. The only incentive nvidia would have for releasing first is because of bragging rights. I'm sure everyone's jaw (including mine) will hit the ground if they are the first with the new 28nm kepler chips.

As for others, I'm not sure about you but I can never have too much gpu performance. Especially since I run triple screen. I would love to trade up my pair of unlocked and heavily overclocked 6950s for a pair or triple set of kepler or southern islands high end. Imagine BF3 fully maxed at 3240x1920 or 5760x1080 and getting a solid 120 fps solid. :D

I'd believe that nvidia would try to paper launch first. With the recent AMD layoffs and consumer confidence at a low right now for AMD, it would be the perfect timing to steal AMD's 7xxx series thunder. Nvidia has show in the past that they're completely willing to "launch" a product that can't ship in quantity for months, I wouldn't be surprised to see them do it again.

To tell you the truth, AMD has not lost much consumer trust int the GPU market. I still frequently get customers who want an AMD card. CPUs on the other hand...

I don't think this has anything to due with Microsoft's non interest imho...

I belive it has to do with the plan ahead that I have seen from slides (Saw them on earlier last year with Windows 7 just released) that said that MS was gong to refine DX11 like they did with DX9 (SM1,2,3.0) over the years. Windows 8 is supposed to support a refinement of DX11. I would imagine DX11.1, .2, .3 ect ect for the forseeable future.

Also I think the new version of the upcoming xbox will be tied into WIndows 8 as well and they want to have a simplified platform for which to develop...As well as more intergration then we see now. (The ability to play xbox games on the WIndows platform...)

Hmm, couple this with other nvidia news, I could see why nvidia MAY be thinking of doing a sort of fire sale.

If analysts are lowering their revenue expectations, and tegra 3 does not perform exactly as nvidia's PR department are leading people to think (hmm, honest PR?), it could possibly mean a stock beating may happen.

I don't think it's anything to do with nvidia's next GPU generation, so much as a stopgap measure in fighting to keep revenue on track for this current quarter.

In any case it may mean better prices for those interested!

Their sales have been dropping steadily. It may be why rumors are circulating of them dropping out of the GPU race.

But what of the rumor of Keplers/7k series being PCI 3.0 cards? I thought they will be released when Ivy Bridge is there, to actually market the cards as "First PCIe 3.0 solution".

It might be that way, that the cards will work at PCIe 2.0, but with Ivy Bridge they will get increased bandwith, or there will be new revision of Keplers with new interface.

When are we expecting this firesale to place? I wouldn't mind grabbing up a 570. Been wanting to for a while.

That would imply that Kepler needs more bandwidth than PCI-E 2.x has to offer. So far, the fastest video cards on the planet barely exceed PCI-E 1.x bandwidth.

I wait in reverse. I'm waiting for BF3 to hit the steam holiday sale. :p

I hate to break it to ya but you might be waiting for a very long time, EA deeply entrenched itself with Origin so its not likely that BF3 will hit Steam....especially since it uses your browser to launch the game and not a true launch platform. Can i have your Video card if you are going to use it? :D If you haven't play BF3 yet your missing out man its a GREAT game.

Well I'm still playing BF2 and BC2 from last year's sale. I don't think Origin should block MW3 from being on steam eventually as "games for windows live" is on steam. As for my card it's a GTX470 and I am seriously considering selling it. If I can get good money for it, I can suffer on an older AMD/NVIDIA card I have lying around until either the fire sale or buy me a shiny new Kepler.

This. Or a 580. Would make selling my 470 at a loss (vs. market) to a friend more palatable. Mind, he NEEDS an upgrade (dying 9800GT FTL). I only 'want' one. But it's a good excuse.

If Nvidia came out with 28nm cards that have a new architecture before Christmas, nobody in my family would be getting Christmas presents from me.

Tbh I think they're just flushing out the GTX 500 series of cards before they announce the release of the 600 series. They'll announce the 600 series cards as "within the coming months" or something along those lines, saying that they're 'really close to finishing everything up'. With that announcement, people will obviously hold off on buying 500 series cards (hence why they're flushing now), and it will steal some thunder away from AMD's 7000 series cards.

I'd still expect a March release for the 600 series cards, maybe a February release for AMD's if things go well.

Hope this happens, I'm waiting for something Kepler based to replace my GTX 460.

That would certainly be a coup for nVidia. Currently though my dual-6970s run BF3 perfectly, and I don't see any games on the horizon that will even touch BF3 in terms of GPU processing power, so I doubt I'll feel the need to upgrade for awhile (hopefully).

I am interested in Kepler if it can do 3 monitors like Eyefinity. Nvidia needs to save me from AMD...

This would ROCK if they get them out that soon.... I'd love to upgrade my 570 SLI!!!

pretty much this. theres no game coming out that is going to challenge those of us with sli/crossfire using cards such as the 570/580/6900's.

edit: atleast at 1080p

I'd be surprised if this comes to pass. Aren't the 28 nm yields coming out of TSMC less than stellar?

It may... the yields aren't stellar but it may be enough for a smaller quantity of high-end-only cards to launch.

Any word on whether Kepler will bring improved power consumption? Especially idle consumption.

If yes, I may wait for Kepler. If no, I may grab a 580 during the fire-sale.

Yeah, at 2560x1600 or eyefinity/surround resolutions it changes :D. I can think of a few challenging titles coming, and some still today, that I'd like more horsepower for at 2560x1600 myself. Chief amongst those is BF3, of course :p.

Considering it is a die shrink, it'll almost certainly bring power improvements with it.

Edit: Assuming they have the process at least halfway figured out, which, actually, may not be all that good an assumption.

I'm busy in location Nelly Factory.... I'll update later...

What does a APi got to do with anything?
They already added the shaders for tessellation. Dx 10 its done on the vertex shaders. Todays games are still avg in what DX 11 still can do. But using it to its fullest will mean only the high end part can play it. Not in everyones budget and the game would not sell a lot.

What the heck does the API matter when we still need lots more speed for current/coming soon titles, let alone to take advantage of what DX11 really has to offer?
