I'm not too sure about this rumor but it would be pretty cool if it turned out to be true. I just don't see Nintendo going with a non-proprietary OS. What do you think?

Current Nintendo hardware uses the company’s own proprietary operating systems. But according to Nikkei, one of Japan’s largest newspapers, that will soon change. One insider tells the paper that the NX will supposedly be built around the Android OS.

Does that mean we'll have to do daily Java updates?

Don't care if it's android or some other existing OS. However Nintendo's strength are in it's first party titles/characters. Concentrating on that and leaving the o/s details to somebody else sounds like a good idea.

Hw much time will it take for somebody to root it and install emulator or kodi on it?

Sounds like Ouya.

Nintendo's first party games have been what's sold many of their consoles for quite a while. A select few have broken through and gotten huge, but not compared to Nintendo's own IP's. Mario, Zelda, Metroid could sell enough consoles to make it a hit. Throw a good Pokemon game in there, and it's huge. Third party has been stagnant since the Gamecube. Even N64 had a weaker third party lineup than SNES/NES. Not bad games, but not the huge hits like Final Fantasy, Street Fighter 2, Castlevania, etc..

Nintendo has been like Sega lately (pre-crash Sega). Excellent first party games, mediocre hardware. The Wii U is a nice system, but it can't compete with the other systems. The games are great, but the console itself isn't on par with Sony & Microsoft. I don't see Nintendo crashing like Sega did, and I'm hoping they come back strong, but the similarities are still there when it comes to hardware and software.

This is a two-edged sword with many pro's and con's.

Clearly they want to be part of the mobile market.

So their games / UI will reflect this.

Personally speaking, I hate mobile games with a passion. Constant in your face up-sale, simpler not as complex graphics, cluster fck touch based controls, etc. Not saying the new Nintendo NX won't have a controller, it probably will. But if it does, it will be blue-tooth based and small enough you can take with you to use on your ... mobile device

My big concern is this, it takes the focus off PC gaming to a degree where we need it. Trust me when I say the PC community has been extremely EXTREMELY blessed with the PS4 and Xbox One having a true PC based architecture. I was really hoping the Nintendo NX would use a higher end AMD APU

Wondering, if this is true, if the recent Nvidia AndroidWorks announcement is a plus for Nintendo....

Seeing how Nintendo wants to expand into the mobile market beyond their own handhelds, this is a move that makes sense.

NO way, will never happen. Nintendo is WAY WAY too "we do things our way" to ever use Android for their OS.

That's great news! I've always thought that Nintendo was behind on allowing a third party like Google to have the ability to data mine what's going on in a living room and if this turns out to be true, they've taken a big step towards catching up with Microsoft and Kinect.

That's a bit cynical. I think the poor sales of the Wii U has been eye-opening for them and they realize they need to make some changes if they want to ensure their longevity.

Nintendo is going to be around for a long time. 1 semi flop of a console isn't going to sink them, they are sitting on a TON of cash.

No, they're fine for now with the Wii U but if the next one repeats, not good. The landscape is shifting and they need to be able to move with it and be more flexible.

I gave up hope for Nintendo being future facing when it came out that their devs dont even look at Xbox Live or PSN to bring Nintendo to online parity. Game devs would send notes to Nintendo saying 'Can you do this, sort of like how it is on Live or PSN?" And the response would be 'you will have to find other terms to use, or no one here is familiar with those platforms'

There shouldn't be a next gen Nintendo, period!

The world does not need a third proprietary subpaar console. Just release what people want, which is the games. It would be great to play Nintendo games on the PC, Xbox, and PS4 and then they could actually have nice graphics and physics.

If it was ARM + Android you're basically looking at a tiny hop over to PC.

Actually, I need to correct that a bit.

The rendering API on an XB1 / PS4 is not equivalent to what's available on PC, so there's a decent amount of work there.

For ARM + Android it would be OpenGL (or maybe GLES, depending on the SoC). So you wouldn't need to even port that part. You would just need to substitute the Android-specific bits with the corresponding target OS libraries.

Of course, it could also be x86 + Android, but the underlying arch isn't that relevant.

It would still be a port and it would suffer and there would be additional costs and time involved.

PC, PS4 and Xbox One are 100% the same. Not a lot of people realize that Software Companies use the PC to code PS4 / Xbox One games.

LOL stop it, you are killing me.

Speak for yourself, sport.

I think Nintendo should stop making hardware. They suck at it. They should focus on their strength: making solid kiddie games that can (often) be enjoyed by adults. There is no reason to think that they will ever cease being an also-ran on the hardware side of gaming consoles.

I guarantee that Nvidia has been knocking on their door. The new Shield IMHO is a proof of concept for the whole world to see that they can produce a console with horsepower, low power consumption, and utilize a universal OS (Android). The Shield is nice but there is no reason Nvidia couldn't up the specs and still walk away with a powerful console that rivals the PS4 and Xbone with half the power consumption.

AND Nvidia's GRID service could keep the hardware costs down and stay in competition with MS and Sony's streaming graphics. Will be interesting to see.

The only fuck up Nintendo did in the last generation is bundling the Wii U LCD controller with the console instead of offering it as an addon. The Wii U would have had better sale number if it came with a classic controler and with a $199 price.

The Wii U by itself is a nice game console with some really fun exclusive titles. It's also the only console I don't own in my collection because I'm not too keen on the iPad like controller.

Now, the Android plateform is quite nice and powerful with great support. I could see it opening a lot of possibility for a company to cut cost on R&D. Hell I can only dream that Sega or NEC could find the $$$ to bring back a console of their own based on an Arm or Tegra APU. No need for something flashy, just bring back the magic that Sony and Microsoft has just about extinguished by flooding the world with Fps over Fps.

How many companies are going to try his crap before realizing nobody wants 100ms of input lag.

They're not exactly the same hardware. Xbox has less memory, GDDR3 (iirc), but includes ESRAM. Sony has GDDR5.

The ESRAM part is the issue. It takes special optimization to utilize and only first title parties funded by MS make use of it because it's easier to just downscale the graphics.

Xbox and Sony traded places in this generation. In the previous one the PS3 was more complex and a bit harder to optimize than the XB360. This generation it's the XB1 who's using some hocus pocus...

If being spied upon by your phone isn't enough, buy the latest Nintendo console, now with twice the spyware.

Dear god, I am going to live in the woods in a few years.

Can we please get more gimmicky controllers? Maybe put an LCD touch screen on it, and few or no other useful controls.

Really, I think this is more of a resignation to reality that its current strategy of being a real competitor to Sony or MS is over. Why spend so much developing a console, despite how much Nintendo can make from first party titles sales, when it could just go with a standard high end ARM SoC-based design and a ready-made OS for it. If it fails to be competitive, the losses can be small. It will have price and power advantages, and if it succeeds it still has a shot at running high end games made for the PS4 and Xbone (maybe at reduced resolution).

Nintendo could still blow a somewhat solid plan by going with stupid gimmicky controllers again.

So it'll be infinitely hackable? Interesting. Not a bad idea Nintendo but I don't think this is going to be a home console as we know it..

Actually, it is pretty accurate. Nintendo operates just like Apple, they run a locked-down, kid friendly, and idiot-proof ecosystem that screws over users with proprietary and inadequate technology (cables/connectors, game media, console features, etc.).

The Nintendo Gamecube 2.0? Yes please.

FTFY.

Gamecube hardware was second only to the Xbox. Had a great GPU in it as well, that was fairly feature rich. Where it fell short was the limited capacity of the mini discs, and lazy third party development, which is why many multi-platform games looked inferior on the system compared to PS2/Xbox.

Give us PS4 comparable specs (which should be inexpensive to do) & drop the LCD controller, and sign me up.

And having 2/3 the amount of shader units is the other major hurdle. Only way around that is overclocking them another 20% or so over what they are now. No way you can overcome that deficit without lowering resolution, e.g. why so many games are rendered at 1280x720 or 1600x900 vs 1920x1080 on PS4.

I rather think that the API will be Vulkan. Nintendo graphics supplier AMD (of course) is on board, as well as Intel and PowerVR. ARM Mali will also support Vulkan, although they seem to be a bit behind the others.

Vulkan will be the natural choice for the graphics API on Android.
