RPG and FPS doesn't mix

wouldn't that just be like any genre vs rpg? Once you get higher level, you naturally resist more.

In fact, with the craze on external shielding in FPS, it probably fits more than most other genres.

I found hilarious how a guy could take 20 shots in the head and kept running.

When playing games like Fallout and Jagged Alliance, you would need to think on how you would shoot the opponents. It wouldn't be fun if you miss 19 of 20 shots if you are playing FPS-RPG. So, instead of missing shots, your gun becomes a pee shooter to satisfy the trigger-hunger.

This isn't exactly a new concept to FPS's either, the snipers at the end of Far Cry could take two headshots from the sniper rifle. Riddle me that Batman?

Fallout 3 is a role playing game first, and a shooter.. well i'd argue it's not a shooter at all. Your stats are what determine your damage and probability of hitting. You can queue up shots in VATS and totally miss. The guy in the video is a level 2 player fresh from the vault. He's not going to be pulling off crits on headshots every single time.

Any of you guys play those CS rpg mod servers? I played the war 3 one a couple of times and starting at lvl 1 i could kill a couple of lvl 10 guys, but it was pretty hard to keep a .500+ score.

This long jump from the cliff in the beggining reminded me how i was doing it on purpose in Oblivion to level up acrobatics and healing magic :D

Even a "pure" FPS like COD4 throws in an RPG element these days. Kill a lot of enemies and you level up.... hmmm, sounds familiar. Higher levels = cooler perks, better weapons, bigger match bonus, etc... hmmm, sounds familiar. The line between these genres is becoming increasingly blurred, so it only makes sense that an RPG would throw in an FPS element. Hell, I'm pretty much strictly FPS but Fallout 3 got me to bite and so far I'm enjoying it.

What's interesting is that with Farcry2 and Fallout 3 you have a FPS adding in rpg elements and a RPG adding in FPS elements. Both were released around the same time, and in both camps you have people bitching that it mixes too many elements of the other...

Well I find it interesting.

I think the problem is that developers just don't understand how to pull it off properly.

Take a game like Final Fantasy:eek: Drop the turn based combat. Switch the view to 1st person. Now use your guns/swords in real time. Hot key your spells. Your other party members fight along side you intelligently, hopefully. Add a command console that pauses the game momentarily in case you need to issue orders to the party. Implement some enemy AI that makes the battles intense and tactical.

In my dreams.

that's a little hard to balance vorpal.

What I don't understand is why we don't have more FPS/RTS games like natural selection.

So basically Mass Effect in the FF universe?

The only ones I know of are the Savage series. I love the gameplay when everyone is working together but if you team has no clue what to do and the other team does it is very one sided and hard to come back from.

Well, it seems like we may be on to something. Nothing great is ever easy.

I find that on the *gasp* easy difficulty that head shots can prove to be quite lethal. The video is probably of a gamer trying to pull off a head shot on very hard.

a good game is a good game regardless.

You can have 2 games both fps, rpg, racing, and puzzle game's and one rock and the other sock it all depends on each game.

Hes using a 10mm pistol...and only like level two

But said 10mm pistol can be used to surgically dismember NPCs? :D

Hoping mods can limit the occurance of dismemberment while increasing the amount of damage taken by a headshot.

I love blowing peoples heads off! best part about the game.. run up, target the head.. Boom

No doubt it's fun, but I think it happens too often and the only weapon I have is that DINKY 10mm pistol. Blasting off limbs left and right, makes no sense that a bandit/raider can take 10+ headshots, then suddenly his skull explodes or flies off.

I gotta disagree here.

STALKER may possibly be the best game I've ever played. It hasn't been out long enough for me to decide if I like it more than HL1.

The "leveling" is very transparent. As you progress you yourself become more accurate but you also begin finding vastly superior weaponry and ammo types. I like that a headshot is always a headshot though. It's just a matter of if you're accurate enough.

The artifacts were also another very creative way to augement your stats like items in an RPG would. It played like a straight up shooter but had deep and interesting mechanics for improving your character and modifying him on the fly for specific situations.

Umm.. that is an NPC in the first town. I am sure that the devs did that on purpose so people wouldn't go "shopping" every day there is a new merchant.

Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2 are RPGs?

Maybe, but very simplistic ones at that. I think your grandparents could play these two without any trouble at all
