I have an older Seagate 7200.7 200gb PATA drive that I found to my surprise was still under warranty. The drive can't be formatted and Seatools can't even perform tests on the drive, though it is still being detected by windows, so I was thinking of RMAing it but what do you think they'll send me back? If they're just going to send me a refurbished PATA drive like the last drive I RMA'd to them about two years ago, I'm just going to chuck the drive in the trash but do they even still have stock of these drives left? If they'd send me a SATA drive though, I'd definitely RMA it. What has your experience been?

i rma'd a hdd with seagate the process was very fast you should send the drive back if they send you a pata you can always sell it

Well it is not going to cost that much, if any, money to do the RMA. So just try it.

Also, have you tried GParted to format the drive? If not, google, download, burn to the LiveCD ISO to a CD and run GParted.

I just rma'ed a 2.5" 160gb drive with samsung, and it said on the rma page that they will send you a refurbished drive. It's probably the same deal with seagate. A week has passed since they have received the drive, and there has been no notice yet.

It cost me $4.29 for a package, first class postage, and tracking to send out the drive. I believe that it's worth it, even though it takes a while to get a drive back. Even if its refurbished, you could sell it for more than the price of the postage.
