So I've been playing Risen on PC for the past couple hours and have built up 31 learning points, how in the fuck do I apply the to attributes ?

I've clicked on every one and the points are still 31 and don;t got to my strength, wisdom ect...

LP, IIRC, go towards your various skills and not your stats. You need to speak to trainers to use them, everything you learn costs a certain number of LP.

Thanks for the reply !

I've been playing for about 4 hours and all my skills are still at the first "dot" ? I've leveled up 3 times and my guy is still weak and shit and I have a bullshit sword.

The quests really don't tell you what to do, just a board idea of what what to do.

This game sux...Should have torranted it first before I bought this junk

I thought it was one of the best RPG's I'd played in a while, and didn't have any trouble figuring out what to do. Are you bothering to talk to people as you go? The first time you talk to a trainer it should be readily apparent what your LP are for. Definitely less hand-holding in Risen than other RPG's of late, but I prefer that.

Wheres the trainer for the prospecting gold and ore ?

I pissed of Boager (I think thats his name) and now he wont talk to me..lol

I think there is a cap on LP too per level if I'm not mistaken. You talk to trainers and can use them to increase your weapon skills and such. Have to find the trainers first.

In the port town ... he's someone that you save in a quest along the way so be patient. You really don't have to start mining until later in the game anyways. This game is a wide open world but is very linear unless you want a difficult time. If you follow the story precisely the difficulty is balanced but if you try to step away from the story then you'll have a hard time with combat.

ya, that is gothic, no arrows pointing to how to resolve your current quest. it has a difficult learning curve but is very rewarding once you do.

the general way to play it is to go around talk to everyone every time you see them and kill all monsters and pick up everything. The missions will automatically complete that way. In this game it doesn't matter if you kill monsters before getting the mission, it does not "penalize" you like other games.

The quest map usually "gives away" where you have to go, but at least it's not as bad as Oblivion's quest compass markers.

Risen is a great game if you like to explore worlds and talk to characters. Risen's combat is fun, but if all you want is a quick hack&slash game, consider looking elsewhere.

Personally I was completely underwhelmed by the "crafting" skills. Blacksmithing was nigh useless for my axe character, and the amulets/rings you can make are only marginally better than what you can find yourself. Alchemy is completely worth it, though.

When I got higher level and was able to start taking on 2 or 3 ghouls at a time I thought I was the shit. Risen is a pretty badass game on PC.

The pace of the game is just to slow for me. Seems like all this talking and running from monsters for little reward ?

Where D3 at dammit !? :D

What kind of reward were you looking for? Fancy looking weapons and armor? Bigger numbers on your character sheet? D3 will have plenty of that, I'm sure, but that's not what Risen is about. If talking to characters is a chore for you, then you're in the wrong genre. Risen is an RPG, not an action game.

edit: if you're running away from lots of monsters you're either facing things way above your level or you need to change the way you fight. Combat in Risen is tricky because button mashing is a recipe for failure. If you're trying to combo some swings you will attack much faster if you click once per swing at the appropriate time instead of mashing the mouse button. And as useful as blocking is, it's often better to dodge, which of course requires paying close attention to when your opponent is about to attack. For combat in Risen, timing is everything. If you'd rather just mow through enemies without any real effort... wait for D3 :p

Ok heres wheres I'm at. when I first went into the swamp camp, I went into Bogars hut and stole some beer and now he won't talk to me, so all the quests that involve him I cant do anything with like:

Bring him his food...
Fight him...
Get his gold piece of the sword
Some other shit with the hunters as well...

I just went onto Harbor town cause I was stuck at the Swamp and couldn't complete the quests.

I don't wanna read a walk through cause that spoils shit. I just wish the quests were more defined on what exactly you have to do, instead of a idea

I think your 'supposed to' go to the monetary after you do some of the Ranger quest. Then Harbor town ... I did the monastery last and all of the monsters on the way there were the stuff I was facing at the beginning of the game.

But anyways, towards the middle part of the game when you start fighting the skeleton camps and Gnomes, it gets really fun, just exploring and finding stuff. By this point you are strong enough to take on almost anything you find. The end of the game when you can kill swarms of ghouls, giants and even the special end dungeons, it's great. The combat is actually one of the best parts of this game if you know what your doing.

All this talking to NPC's is so fucking boring !!! Theres like 15+ different people to talk to and they all have a shit load to say.... Wheres the combat in Harbor Town ? Handing out meds, investigating the break-ins blah blah blah....Holyshit this is slow...

Do you guys actually sit there and listen or read all the conversations ? I don't have the time for that shit and I'm falling asleep !

Yes. I rather enjoyed the conversations, story, and voice acting.

Risen doesn't "hold your hand" the way some other games might. Yes, you can "screw up" and have parts of the game locked off - but it's all part of the game. Your actions have consequences. You can always reload a saved game, though. There's more than one path through the game, and they're pretty much mutually exclusive, and that generates replay value.

If you really want to rejoin the Don's crew, try starting a new game.

Risen is good enough that you might still enjoy it despite hating dialogue as much as you do, but there's no shortage of dialogue in Risen.

There were very few combat situations in Harbor Town.

Like I said, I think you're stepping outside of the story line and that's why the game is not going well for you.

Shore->Ranger Camp-> Monastery-> Harbor Town

At that point, you have had a chance to consider the 3 class options and can start picking away at the quest you are capable of knowing. Plus you'll have the skills needed once out in the wilderness.

If you go to the Don's camp or go to Harbor Town you haven't technically joined the Don's men or the Monastery and can do the early quests for both sides. If you go straight to the monastery at the beginning of the game you'll be forced to join up and you won't be able to work for the Don at all. It kind of sucks, but curiosity killed the cat.

As you do quests in Harbor Town you can chose how you complete the quests, whether or not you help the Don or the Monastery. As a result you can join either. The don's group is good for swords, axes, bows, crossbows. The monastery is better for staves and magic.

If you do join the Don you will eventually go inside the Monastery as an envoy, and you can learn a bunch of the minor magic skills, if you want them.

See thats the thing, if I screwed up and locked off stuff in the swamp camp, then the game should tell me that and cancel the quests, but they are still "current" and open in my widow.

I ran around the swamp land for hours last night talking to everyone and exploring everything and the quests wouldn't update or change status.

If they are now locked to me, then tell me that and let the player know this so they don't try to complete them and can't.

Sounds like Risen just isn't your kind of game. You'll have a much better time if you try to solve problems in a more...diplomatic manner. But when push comes to shove you can rob and/or kill your way through a lot of those quests in the harbor town.

This isn't the only path through the game.
I know but based on difficulty of enemies encountered along the way, it's the most logical to me. It's absolutely not the path I followed. I did shore->rangers->wander around for a week dieing a whole bunch until I got around level 15-> Harbor town->Monastery

For an RPG, when it comes to combat, the game is pretty twitch action combat oriented.. The combat on Easy in Risen is harder than the hardest setting on most action/RPGs. Especially since gaining a level gives you like, +6% HP, and for the monsters it's more like +1000%.. Plus the harder a mob is, the more likely it is to be chained to a horde of friends.

It's a fairly sadistic game in the combat department, just like Gothic 3.

I love RPGs but I hate when they require world class action gaming skills to play. I admit it.. I'm pushing 40 and my action gaming skills are only going downhill. :D

That being said, barring Gothic 3, I've never had such problems with the combat in an action/RPG as I have with Risen. I think they did a terrible job with game balance.. The first mobs I ran into took 3 or 4 hits to kill, and gave me 50xp, and would do about 10 damage and only came one at a time.. Then the 2nd level of mobs I run into take 15+ hits to kill, do over 20 damage when they hit, come in pairs or more, and give 60xp per kill? Bleh! I'd hate to see the game on Hard, do you just die in 1 hit? And to boot when I finally learned how to dodge, it seems like if you can get just 1 mob on you, and dodge it 100%, the next mob is automatically adjusted to you and change it's attack pattern... And if you have more than 1 mob on you, forget about dodging, because while you dodge the mob you are in combat with, the other one will chew out your asshole in just a few seconds. I apparently just lack the reflexes to deal with that.

GAH!!

At least the game has an easily accessible god mode.

There is a difference between "holding [ones] hand" and having the feedback of a cold, dead, lifeless hooker, though. :D
hehe!

To be fair, the NPC says he won't talk to you. Either you need to find something to appease him or give up. Or kill him. That's roleplay :).

So I been playing Dragon Age instead !

Way better gameplay and graphics :D

Fuck Risen !

I agree it's a better game but your crazy if you don't think Risen is also a good game ;) Risen is simply more of a challenge and much more rewarding to me than DA was. First time I killed an Ashbeast in Risen was the shit. Never got that feeling in DA for any of the combat ... not even dragons (which were all pushovers).

I played DA: O then Risen and enjoyed both for what they are.

It's a hell of a hard game! I rather picking flowers and mushrooms instead.

Risen has a reverse learning curve. The game starts off very hard then gets easier towards the end as you master the combat system. It was a refreshing game, that I enjoyed. Few modern RPG's capture the old school feeling of challenge and reward that Risen does.

Risen was very good! I played it through several times. It was a little slow in the beginning but it picks up nicely. It had a pretty steep learning curve compared to Diablo or Elder Scrolls games. The combat alone took time to learn and get good at. Risen was a well rounded RPG with a nice blend of exploration, puzzles, combat, and NPC interaction.

I had a blast with it. Not too deep but not too light either just right.

I really dont enjoy any game where I get bogged down in grindy combat and stat nonsense. I just played through the game and it was over.

Like most said worry about your skills not your stats.
