hey guys, I have a little 10 year old cousin who recently got caught by his mother looking at porn sites on his computer. She asked me to coem over and restrict his computer so he cant access pornography websites. I dont know how to do this, is there a free program i can use?

someone might come up with a program that keeps an uptodate database BUT the simplest solution is to block all sites

have a list of pre-approved sites (bbc,wikipedia,....) and add them to the hosts file, everything else gets re-directed to 127.0.0.1

THEN if the kid wants to look at a site it has to get approved and checked out (before adding to the hosts file)

Admididly IF they really want to look at pron on the net they would just boot a liveCD, but then you install a computer-based router and block it there. Then they just bypass it...

if the kid was 16 I would say you are in for a fight but for a 10yo, just block it

Whew, thanks for the help. Hehe :D !

http://netnanny.com/

Netnanny or something like it to help block sites.

You could also use a pc as a router and use like ipcop and load a blacklist on it. That would fight the live cd thing.

Nothing is 100% though. I'd load netnanny or something like it and have the parent monitor the child. They try to bypass that and you remove the computer. It is that simple. You just don't let them use it unless you(the parent) are there.

Thanks swatbat.

Netnanny is one of the oldest ones still around. Wish I had more info for you but I haven't really messed with the stuff.

Anyway they have or at least use to have a good record for the software. Cyberpatrol is another one to look into. They are one of the other ones that has been around for a while.

I just visited my aunt. It turns out, he isnt 10, he is 15 and has decent knowledge about computers. Netnanny or any other programs are out of the question, he'll just uninstall it. I was a horny mother fucker at the age 15, so i know if he wants to look up porn, hell find a way. What im going to do now, is format his computer and install Windows XP. Im going to create an admin account that only his aunt will know the password. Im going to create him a user account and block ALL websites and only allow only certain websites. I will also restrict some other fuctions on there as well.

Two more things. One, lock out the bios, non-hd boots, and physically lock the computer. Moving it into the living room or public area is another good idea. Maybe you can do a double filter, one on the computer and one at the router as well. Second, just smack the kid around a bit. That usually works where I'm from.

This is one fight you can't win if he decides to use Torpark should he get desperate. Against the determined there nothing you can really do.

install win98se on his comp .. it wont be long before his comp is so chalked full of spyware and virii that it will run so slow that it will be unusable ..not to mention the fact that their isp will probably shut them down as the 98 box will most likely be turned into a spam server on top of shooting out virii thru his isp's network.. maybe with a little luck the Feds will come and confiscate his computer due to the huge kiddie porn collection that would mysteriously find its way onto his comp ...

Netnanny and others like it require a password to uninstall. Takes a little more work. Will stop most users.

It is simple. You lock it out some and if the kid bypasses it you remove the computer from the room. Really netnanny will prob be enough for your averge 15 year old, something like ip cop with url filtering and forcing everything to proxy for the more advanced.

Yes there are ways around it but you can always remove the machine if the kid trys to bypass them.

Or... do the kid a favor and tell his aunt that you don't know of a way and let him have it... since when is it a sin to like women? Something is wrong with the aunt if she spies on him like that

The older I get, the more I subscribe to this; It's perfectly nature for teenagers to go looking for porn. Were this me, I'd stay out of it. Not only out of respect for the kid, but because I wouldn't want to get involved in a battle of wills between the aunt and her son.

Is there a program that will allow you to target IP addresses. Meaning, lets say my IP is 192.168.0.12 and on the same network your ip is 1923.168.0.13. Can I tell the program to block content on 12 and not 13?

If you got a linux based router I guess you can just tune the route tables to block port 80, Custom firmware's like HyperWRT also have access control where youo can block a particular LAN comp from internet at certain times or by url keywords.

Hey, I've got a question on that Netnanny/K9 software. I run a Clarkconnect at home, but I get a lot of people who ask me what to use for porn blocking at home, and I never know what to say since Clarkconnect is waaay out of their league. Even if they have NN/K9 installed and password-protected, what's to stop the horny teen from opening the task manager, right-clicking the service, and killing it immediately? Surely there's no password prompt when they end it that way, right?

Solution = Rootkit. Like the *sony* one, that hid the service from appearing in the task list.

Lot of them will restart if the program was to stop working. Would think they do as well.

Maybe I'm old fasioned, but I would just pull either the computer, or the net access. Or since it's listed as "his" computer I would move it into a public place.

2nd.

No way would a 15yr old be running the show in my home. Sorry, but adults should be in control and porno boy should not have a PC in his room. Put the PC in the family room, harder to enjoy yourself and your porn when mom is sitting in the chair behind ya reading a book or something.

Endian would also be a viable option. I think pfsense does this as well, but I do not know about it as well as IPCop or Endian. I still have to get my Endian box running :(

Tell your aunt she's lucky he likes women, and all will be well.... he'll get bored with it eventually. Then she REALLY needs to worry because its LIVE GIRL time...wooo hooooo!

I've been preaching this for almost 15 years, do not put a Computer in the kids room. Have their computer in a public place.

My first computer was on the dining room table that we didn't use. My dad sat 10' to my right and walked right past me to get into the kitchen. My mother sat 20' behind me in the living room and would work in the kitchen while I was on the computer so she could see whatever I was doing. Plus Dad & I played some of the computer games at the time (1990 - 1992) together.

I didn't have a computer in my room till I was 18, and I moved out of the house when I was 19.

K9 will either restart as soon as you end it, or the internet is completely unusable until you re-boot.... cannot remember which one it is....

I remember being that age, and facing down similar software in highschool. My general attitude was "... what? You think you can best ME in the arcane realm of this High Art? I think not, mortal!"

To be fair, I did beat 'em. You aren't ever going to beat them through a purely technological solution -- as another poster said, get her to put the comp in a public room where people walk past in plain view.

If he still browses porn, blatantly this time, then there are issues beyond naughty pics extending into household discipline.

get the kid a years subscription to videobox.com. only like 100 bucks. then show the aunt the site and show her how easy it is to use. she'll love it.

winproxy.com. I used that a few times when I worked for cybercamps.com. We had hundreds of young campers every year and had to make sure they were blocked. It has some thing that's automatic where it will filter out a bunch of stuff. Blocks pretty much everything. Nice software to use because you really only need a box with 2 nics and it'll do all the DHCP stuff and all that. Not as advanced as windows server but will easily serve 100+ boxes if the nics are fast enough and such.

same company makes K9, and it's free... why bother with this??

Clarkconnect is also free, and darn near bulletproof for even the most desperate of horny 15 year old males. It's brainless to set up, and the only real requirement is two NICs and a decent amount of RAM. A 486/Pentium (1) could run it just fine.

smoothwall or IPCop or Endian with DG mod (already incorporated in Endian) and updated blacklist from urlblacklist.com and and a little configuring here and there and you got a pretty good start against blocking porn thru out and out url blocking and content filtering .. block proxies and the like as well and ports associated with Tor stuff (unless it uses port 80 .. dont know much about Tor servers and all that)

Hold up one second here, has the aunt tried just asking him to stop? Has she made it clear to him why she thinks that him looking at porn is unacceptable so that he has the chance to think it over for himself?

Putting net-nanny software on his PC, without asking him to stop first, will be seen as a challenge to be overcome. This is not the effect you want.

If this is still an issue after being asked not to brows porn sites, and after being told why it is unnaceptable, then I would moved the PC into a public place and install net-nanny software. Make it perfectly clear to him that this loss of privacy is the result of his actions, and his failure to abide by the rules of the house. Now, so he doesn't end up hating you as his raging hormones kick in, be sure to tell him that he can have his computer back in his room after a set amount of time, but also tell him that if he ever browses porn on that computer again, it will be coming out of his room permanently.

there are content filter devices that scan packets as they arrive and block if content is in a blacklist. of course, it cant determine context. somethings are 'ok' in correct content.

frankly. c.d.e. had the best suggestion, move the box to a public area.

To those suggesting using contenting filtering all I can say is that it simply won't work. Like I said before he will simply use TOR which encrypts all traffic and since Torpark is a stand alone app he could keep it on a USB and you would never know.

TOR may be slow but when you are desperate you will use any means possible. The only way is to threaten to take the comp to the kitchen or living room if he doesn't stop.

Limited account then make copies of the history folder every couple days and print a list of the porn sites he visits and hang it over the computer to embarass him.

I donno bout you, but seems to me at ten, I was in more of an "EEEEwwww girrrrls" then a "Hey sexy". Ten years old is, what... grade one or two?

If the kid wants to look at porn, theres nothing you can really do about it. always some way to get at porn, this is the 21st century after all.

gouge out his eyes ... but then I suppose he would just get some braille porn or something

Tell her to give up, it is inevitable. Porn is pretty half the point of the internet.

I think I had netnanny or some such program put on my computer when I was young; it took me about a week to figure out a workaround.

The only real solution I can think of is using a firewall type appliance that can block the sites before they reach the computer in the first place. Also, tell her to write down the password somewhere; my mom forgot ours and was blocked from accessing a website she needed:D
