Rear case fan? This is a FT02, I want it on the intake for maximum cooling.

Nothing other than nice lighting and low noise for 1800RPM.
any particular reason people recommend using lian li bay covers instead of the silverstone ones for stealthing the optical drives? and what's the easiest way to cut the metal? will wire cutters do?
hmmmm I watched the guy's vid apparently the C-02A & C-02B have that button thingy on the bottom. Unfortunately he never really goes into details on the process for cutting and attaching the parts to make the mod.....

So I just finished parting out my system (Minus the FT02 and video cards) and I'm looking into what I might build come August. I've read here & elsewhere that it's not good to SLI/Xfire without an empty slot between cards and it's making the decision between going P55 (again) and X58 difficult. It'll probably be two 285's, so I'm wondering if anyone's running a multi GPU setup with a Gigabyte X58 board. All of their X58 boards have pretty lousy layouts, but I <3 Gigabyte and getting OSx86 on just about any of their boards is a piece of cake. I'm also a little concerned about the heat, because I'd really like to do some folding for [H] whenever I get this thing put together.

It's FUD, always has been, always will be.
The extra space HELPS but in no way is it REQUIRED.
I still get around 52c idle and low to mid 70s @ load with the fans @ 80% (f@h 24/7).
Need to take new pics, have an Arrow to install and some other minor things to do but otherwise - I'm still using this board+those cards with no problems and my system folds 24/7 meaning full load 24/7.
I do not have heat problems.
Just noticed you mentioned wanting to get into f@h, congrats, welcome to the club/obsession.
Again, I f@h 24/7, currently with a TRUE Spirit w/1x Yate Loon D12SH-12 I get around 71-72c @ load running -bigadv, again, 2 gpu clients going I get low to mid 70s with the 260's set to 80% fan speed (ambient temp is around 27c/80F maybe a few degrees higher). I do need to install the Arrow because right now it's sitting unused and with summer starting today and mid-90s (F) the norm in my neck of the woods (outside St. Louis, MO) I can use all the cooling help I can get. Can't wait to run the Arrow w/2x high Yates.

Thank you for the concise answer! I figured it all came down to that and I guess that means I'll be grabbing an X58A-UD5 or X58A-UD7 sometime in august. Now I'm kinda hoping this i7 950 dropping below $300 rumor/chart happens and the main reason I want to get into folding is because I love [H]. I'm on some other forums, but not too many people know what they're talking about or help out as much as users on this forum do.

wow, you're one of the only people i've seen put an optical drive in the top slot hehe. kudos
I noticed you put the strap on the PSU. I ended up not doing it because it crossed over the PSU fan.
Also I noticed we have the same MB, so I like how you connected the USB & FP so i'm gonna steal that idea

I was able to fit my optical drive in my top slot too. As for the PSU strap, I don't really feel it really does much. I guess it's helpful if your fan screws strip or something. I have mine on though.
Take out the PSU before you install the Arrow, it'll help A LOT. Installing my arrow was a pain in the ass due to its huge size. I'm running two San Ace H1011s at 1250rpm on my Arrow right now with a GT1850 turned down to 1600rpm on the exhaust.
well started to try and stealth the dvd drive. Sadly I didnt have anything to cut the aluminum so I just bent off the ends. The sides are exposed but i'll deal with it I guess. Tried to do the mod w/ velcro tape and that was a failure. I'm going to pick up some double sided tape and try it the proper way to make sure the aluminum is flush with the rest.
Anyone got any recommends on how to handle the button? velcro tape felt too mushy and the aluminum portion got a bit too bendy towards the bottom.

God I love that board, I dunno why. I think it's the blue SB HS and the word "Workstation".
Going to TRY to finally get to doing my swaps and put up some pictures later. I'm hoping I can hide cables even better than I did before (which was pretty damn nice if I do say so myself). Have to flip on my "cable management OCD" switch.

Now I got to just wait for my doublesided tape to come in so I can attach the panel in front to stealth my drive.
Does anyone know how many layers of tape is good to make sure it's flush with the panel? also how many for the button. I want to make sure I get a good click. I also considered placing cardboard all around the tray portion since that gap seems to make the panel flex when you press the button.

Wohooo! my new vid cards will have the proper fan type that exhausts all air outside.
Errr either way, still no response at all about stealthing... I glued a layer of cardboard w/ a hole for the tray area so that when you press the corner to open it, it won't feel so empty inside. hopefully it'll work as intended.

I'm putting a done stamp on this one, I have no future upgrades coming down the pipe. I'm topped out where I need it (ram and storage), no desire to go 4-series, etc.
In case anyone's wondering - (other than specs in sig), ocz 30gb ssd (win7x64), wd6400aaks (apps), samsung f3 1tb (storage)
Arrow dropped my load temps 4 degrees. woot!

Hey Zero, what are your temps with the arrow and yates?
I'm getting about 36.5C idle (averaged across all cores) on my 920 with an ambient temp of 28.5C (83F).
That's with two San Ace H1011s turned down to 1250rpm and the 180mm case fans set to low.

I got glue all over my hand today lol... prospects for this are bleak... not to mention I didn't bother cutting off the sides, I just bent it off so I lost that bit of side metal....
But I guess this is what I get for trying to save $13 and getting the silver case instead of the black one.....
and just plopping that on here w/ some doublesided tape...

42c idle - 68c load while f@h (ambient temp roughly 27c/80f in that room, maybe slightly higher in the afternoon heat)
Intake 180s set to high
AS5 tim
OC to 3.82ghz w/HT @....1.325 Vcc and 1.355 Vtt (IIRC, something close to that)
Don't know if it'll drop a degree or two after some more power cycles (since AS5 has the break-in period). I'm still happy with it though, with the TRUE Spirit it was around 72c @ load w/1 Yate.

Finally finished the stealthing now that my doublesided tape came in today.
Plus I have nothing else to do with the case till my cpu comes in tomorrow.
Awesomely the case seems to have a right side gap for some odd reason even when I placed the faceplate perfectly. It's also noticeable in the plates below but less so since they still have that side piece. If only I knew or had the patience to cut the aluminum properly instead of just bending off the sides...
Other than that it is functioning very well. the cardboard in the bottom half was a good decision as it allows the whole bottom section to be a button as opposed to just the corner.
However from the side it was pretty obvious once again that i should have taken the time to cut the aluminum side portion
But oh well, all in all good enough for me and functional. And no hideous giant black plastic slab on the front.
Plus I have nothing else to do with the case till my cpu comes in tomorrow.

Damn nice job on that stealth mod! Thanks for the pictures too! I had a hard time envisioning how you were trying to stealth your drive, but now it seems pretty clear and easier to do than I thought.
I want to purchase a Silverstone FT02 case. I'm not sure which one to get, the one with red interior comes with the new AP Penetrator fans. Are the plain black models also shipping with these fans?
I like the red but I don't want to be stuck with a particular theme.

either way it would have ended up costing $87 more for the red one after tax + shipping from newegg rather than the silver one from amazon so I decided against it.

I believe Tony said the AP181 on "low" cools like the stock FN-181 on "high." Honestly, I don't notice a difference between the high and low settings with the stock FN-181s.
I am interested to see if individual components such as graphics cards and CPU heatsinks benefit from the more directional airflow though.

So I am guessing you can't fit a Lian-Li little stealth door thing on this case for the optical drives? That is too bad..Otherwise this is a good case for a media PC IMHO. I don't like this design for desktops cause I have small place and like to be able to put stuff on top of my computer (bills and such)..

You can mod it to work. Check youtube for the German dude who did it.
That video really sucked hehe. Pretty much just talked about it rather than really showing you how he did it besides just cutting off the sides and using a glue gun.

TBH I don't think there's going to be much of a drop; it'd have to be like 10c for me to consider paying $75 for 3 fans just to drop a few degrees, it would have to be something monumental. In that case, hell, you could run an open bench and save money or just take the side panel off. The fan design is intriguing, it's a neat idea...however it's just not very economical for me, again I don't think we'll see enough of a temp drop to justify the added expense.I'm curious to see what the temp difference is. Also I'd be curious to see if the 120mm ones benefit as CPU fans. Either way knowing myself, I probably wouldn't buy until one of my fans fail.
