BusinessWeek says that researchers are kicking around the idea of scrapping the internet and starting from zero. Great idea, they can go ahead and get started on a new one, we’ll wait here until it’s done.

The idea may seem unthinkable, even absurd, but many believe a "clean slate" approach is the only way to truly address security, mobility and other challenges that have cropped up since UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock helped supervise the first exchange of meaningless test data between two machines on Sept. 2, 1969.

Yeah, that's kinda the idea behind Internet 2. Why don't we go ahead and scrap TCP/IP as well. Not like that's important...

I think it's a good idea, we also need a new interstate roads system....let's shut down all the interstates while we build new ones....check back with them in 20 years or so  These guys need to stay in their ivory towers and think some more :p

That parody about reaching the end of the Internet may not be so impossible now. :D

bah.

the current internet works fine.

it's all the damn commercialization and wanna-be regulation that's jacking it all up.

It will just be an opportunity to sneak in more big business and government control in the end, I'm sure.

"These clean-slate efforts are still in their early stages, though, and aren't expected to bear fruit for another 10 or 15 years -- assuming Congress comes through with funding."

Sounds like a disaster in the making already!

Definitely Big Biz and Big Bros. way of having more control... not to mention a possible end run around keeping the U.S as sole controller of the "internet". A new internet would of course need a neeewww governing body...pffft

What, are they just gonna leave us with the biggest "Under Construction" sign ya ever did see?

It's true, you know. Education does not guarantee common sense.

lol, shut down the internet, lol

I am at a loss of words... all that comes to mind is lol.

Well, gosh, I have no trouble juggling usenet, e-mail, ftp, and the web. I use them every day, and I'm no expert.

I don't imagine an additional protocol would cause me any more headache than what I currently face trying to reconfigure my laptop to use my home gateway to connect to my work server (via proxy server) using VPN.

Internet V1 for business? Scrap it, I say.

I predict the prototype will be ready in only 37 years. I hope to have wireless intarweb2 in my flying car. And of course, these extra sekuritee features will be "uncrackable"!

If Al Gore hurries up and drops his global warming attention whoring, he could actually take credit for inventing a new internets.

lol.gif
That's why I love reading the news here, very funny(and true) responses from the masses. Keep up the great work. :p

"we forgot to make it so we can rip everyone off!"

The original internet was meant for everyone to play safe and everyone was trusted. Now look at how much effort is put into security. If the new internet provides such a benefit, I'm all for it.

But, If the tubes spring a leak during construction.... electrons could drown

Edjumication sure makes for good ideas.
