1) What will you be doing with this PC?
Mostly independent computer science research. (5% for gaming, perhaps)
2) What's your budget?
$7500~$10000 (only if there is a good reason to over-extend to $10000)
3) Where do you live?
New York City
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget?
# Motherboard
# EVGA GTX 580 x 4 (3072MB memory, $580 each)
# CPU
# RAM sticks
# PSU
# Case - [$510] - http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/1159/picture13krw.png
# Monitor x3 (As mentioned below)
# SSD
# Liquid Cooling System (Yes, I'm up for the hassle that it will bring. GPU & CPU waterblocks / radiators / tubings)
Here is the deal:
I need as much RAM space as possible. (Favorably 96GB or more. Believe me I will need it.)
I've been looking into server motherboards because they support 12~24 RAM slots.
There are few 8GB DDR3 (for servers, single-stick, registered, ECC (which I don't need)) sold at $175 a stick, which I'm willing to pay for. But the problem is: there are no server motherboards that support Quad-SLI that I'll need for massive calculations for a long time. (I'll be programming in CUDA.)
Then, I found this (EVGA Classified-SR2):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188070&Tpk=evga motherboard
(Thus the $500 MountainMod case mentioned above.)
Everything is perfect in this board; 12 RAM slots, 2 CPU slots, 7 PCI2.0 slots, etc.
Except the [Maximum Memory Supported], which was only 48GB.
So I'm basically stuck:
I don't want to sacrifice the 6-TFLOPS that can be generated by Quad-SLI, but I also want to avoid having only 48GB Memory.
[Revision: I found out that it is indeed possible to achieve 96GB Memory with SR2 but MHz is limited to 1333 or 1066MHz
http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?&m=355031&high=sr-2+full+dimm&mpage=1
in fact, I've also found that you can even do 196GB with 16GB single-sticks (1066MHz)]
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing?
No reusing.
6) Will you be overclocking?
Overclocking is certainly a good option since I will be using liquid cooling system.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
# 24" LED Monitor x2 or x3 - [$500 - $750]
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...0&cm_re=24_led_monitor-_-24-001-440-_-Product
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Around 2011 Q3/Q4
9) What features do you need in a motherboard?
As mentioned.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
I'll use Linux. (with Windows 7 booting option; I'm a student, I can get academically-funded Windows 7)
Thanks a bunch for reading through.
Now, I'd appreciate some master-status responses, lol.
p.s.: I've found a similar build, and I'm liking it.
