I am looking to purchase a new or used HTPC.

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Music: 20%, Digital Pics: 10%, Internet: 20%, Record TV shows: 10%, Burn/Play DVD's: 20% and Gaming: 10%.

2. What's your budget? $400 to $600(including tax and shipping).

3. Where do you live? USA

4. What exact part do you need for that budget? I have no parts on hand so would need: case, motherboard, cpu, power suply, fans, CPU, RAM, hard drive, tv tuner, dvd rw, burner.

5. N/A

6. Will you be overclocking? No

7. Monitor? I have a 40" Sony XBR 1.

8. When do you plan on buying the PC? Immediate Future.

9. What features do you need in a motherboard? Not sure, open for suggestions.

10. Do you have a leg and reusable/transferable OS key? no.

I am watching/considering this item presently on Ebay:

HTPC Case: Silverstone LC17 Black
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0Hz Socket AM2
125W Dual-Core Processor
Cooler Master eXtreme RP-500-PCAR 500W ATX12V v2.01 Power Supply
G.SKILL 2 GB(2 x 1GB)240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL.5D-2GBNQ
GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4 AM2 nVidia nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
GIGBYTE GV-NX86T256D GeForce 8600 GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
LITE-ON 20X DVD_+ R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model LH-20A1L-06
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250820AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0 Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive
Operating System: XP Professional

No Bids yet on a $299 listing. Note: He will add 500GB Hard Drive for additional $40.00 Plus he recommended this TV Tuner: Hauppauge HVR-1600($85 at Newegg). Also, I would purchase a wireless keyboard and mouse(one of the Harmony Logitech units)and would use the Universal Remote I presently have: Harmony Logitech 890. I did speak with my local wiring guy who will install.

Would appreciate any comments anyone might have.

Thanks.

I would not get that for a htpc-the processor uses too many watts, the DDR2 is End of life, that is a horrible mainboard for a HTPC, XP is now not used in favor of windows 7. That would have been mostly good 3 years ago.

Thanks much for your suggestions. I appreciate that my previously considered HTPC was out of date. I am back to the drawing board and will definitely make use of your suggested components.

Gwarrens build is perfect for your needs unless you want an even fancier htpc case. The only thing you might want to change on his build is whether or not you want a blu ray drive, otherwise that is the best bang for the buck right now.

Shadowsong:

Thanks for confirming gwarren's suggestions.

After reviewing them tho, wouldn't I need a CPU and Motherboard to make a complete, functioning HTPC?

I welcome any insight.

Check again. If you had read it, you would have seen that one of those links is actually link to a combo deal for RAM, CPU, AND mobo.

Danny:

Thanks, I see it now.

What about the combo deals from Newegg? Most of them save 20% or so.

Danny:

The one that caught my eye was:

Intel Core i3/H55 Integrated Graphics SuperCombo which includes:

1. Lian LI Lancool PC K58W ATX Mid-Tower Computer Case
2. ASUS P7H55-Mpro LGA 1156 Intel H55 HDMI MICRO ATX Motherboard
3. Thermaltake TR2 TRX-650M 650 Watt Power Supply
4. Intel Core i3-530 Clarkdale 2.93Ghz 4MB L3 Dual Core Desktop Processor
5. G.Skill Ripjaws Series 4GB(2+2GB)240Pin DDR3 Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

Combo price is $416.96 after discount of $102. This may not be everything, but it looks like a pretty good start.

Comments are welcome.

Is this new?

Is that a combo deal? The case should be changed to a NSK2480 and the Seagate should be a Samsung1tb or WD 1tb. The St30000 is an older series HD.

How much is that setup?
You're building that setup, correct?

Oh then nvm. See I thought that was a build from Newegg. If it's from ebay, those are more than likely used parts. That also means that you pretty much do not get the actual hardware warranty. I wouldn't recommend buying it.
