Decided to start a poll to see if the community wanted a sub-forum for the various Boinc Clients ...

As it stands right now, it is harder for them to discuss issues and such due to the high volume of F@H posts ...

Since we are such a large team , and there are a growing number of users running DC projects under the Bonic Client maybe they should have their own area ..

So --- Vote and express your opinion ...

When the poll closes in 5 days, I forward it to Kyle and get his opinion if there is enough support ....

PS - I know that first option is messed up .... was trying to type way to fast ....

Voted for #1. I think our DC-Vault team is gaining some steam and i'd love to get out of that stuffy thread.

I think it's worth a shot. If there isn't enough activity, it can always be changed back to the way it is now.

Voted for #2. A Bionic subforum would streamline the DC forum resulting in better communication for both F@H and Bionic.

I'm voting for #1, but suggest it be made a subforum under DC, like the DC FS/FT subforum, not a first level subforum equal to DC.

Remember, many of us [H]ard Commandos still have a hand in F@H, too - even though I could switch my 2 9600GSOs over to GPUGrid for the BOINC points, they will stay F@H, end of story.

I'm pretty sure that's the idea. It wouldn't make sense for BOINC to get its own full subforum when there's already one for DC.

i picked #1.. im all for having a sub forum for boinc/non F@H related DC projects and would clean up the main DC section for F@H related topics..

Voted #3, not sure if there is enough activity in the BOINC community, I myself am a proud member of it, but I just dont see the need for a new sub forum. I also dont belive that further seperation of all the fantastic DC projects would benifit anybody.

Maybe if folding @ home guys need there own sub forum?

notice the 2000+ posts in the DC-vault thread? lol i think there is enough activity just from the 10 of us that post in there to warrant having a sub forum.. and there are a ton of WCG/seti people as well with no where really to ask questions and crap..

Yes I did, and for argument sake it works with in the DC forums, people (you included) post information there and retrive information that is of benifit to them and becouse there is enough interest in the DC Vault it stays on the front page for the most part.
And just a friendly reminder there is a DC Forum here at the "OCP" that the ton of WCG/seti people can ask questions and crap, there arn't any rules againt that here.

what ever.. your no fun.. :p

Just so you know I would like to see the popularity of the BOINC client soar, I love it, its stable, its easy to use and being able to choose your projects rocks. I just dont feel that segregation (sp?) is the answer.

I also voted for #3. Right now I just dont think there is enough demand to warrant another subforum. Plus I dont think that the positives outweigh the negatives here. The only positive I see is that it would become a more organized place for people to find all things BOINC.

With that positive might come some negatives too. Might be harder for new users to find BOINC info if they just come casually wandering into the DC subform. Also I think having all of us in the same subform is good for team unity. If there were separate subforms I think it would feel like 2 teams (F@H, and everyone else). BOINC guys wouldnt maybe see as much F@H info/news/discussions and F@H guys wouldnt maybe see any of the BOINC news/discussions/info.

I hope the BOINC community grows here and maybe at that point and time a BOINC subform would make sense but right now I think it could do more harm than good.

At the most basic level we are the Horde no matter what project you DC for. I hope we continue to be a team and not two teams.

I voted for #3 as well. Yes the DC-Vault thread is booming but thats only one thread. I like the one thread idea for now. I have been to other forums to see how they do it and they have threads for each project and no one posts in them. Its too spread out. Also, I like the idea of one thread because everyone checks it and answers can be made quickly.

I like the way it is right now its stable and we are all the same team under distributed computing

I voted for #1, but I don't really like the BOINC name, because a lot of the DC project I run are non-BOINC. I can't really think of a better name, though.

I don't think the amount of traffic is that big of an issue. One thing I like about that-#1-DC-Vault-team's forum is that they have a thread for each DC project, and some of ththe threads get very little traffic, but it's a nice place to collect the team's wisdom on how to set up various projects (especially important for weird/complex projects like sieving) and track the team's progress in that specific project. If we did that in the main DC forum here, it would create too much clutter. It's also painful to have to search the huge DC Vault thread for that info.

This is a perfect example of a justification for #1 - last night, I was trying to sort through the 101 pages of the DC Vault thread to find 1 post on how to make the BOINC client automatically send results when a WU is finished. No matter what I tried searching for, I never found the post I was looking for.

And for the record, we currently have two regular threads for DCing, the DC Vault thread of pure chaos, and The Official Project Listing Thread started by Alan 2308... Just sayin' :D

I don't really see the point. Here's a few of my arguments for leaving things alone:

1. The only reason it would have been necessary is if there were enough people genuinely offended that someone would dare talk about anything non-F@H here (and there was a time that was the case).

2. There's not really enough forum activity here anymore to justify it.

3. We can and do have threads about non-F@H projects.

4. Nobody every said that everything else had to stay in the DC-Vault thread. If something is an important enough topic and warrants its own thread, start a thread for it.

5. Dumping off the Commandos into a sub-forum is basically calling us second rate citizens here. We're on e team here are we not?

Edit: nevermind, I'm an idiot.

I agree completely.
Boinc is DC and the proper place to talk about Boinc is in the existing Distributed Computing forum.

I voted for #3 and heres why:

1. IMO theres not enough activity to warrant a sub forum.....yea there are those two huge threads......but that brings me to my next point.
2. Why is everything posted in DC-Vault?
3. Someone said that BOINC threads would get lost in all the F@H threads....I completely disagree if you split up DC-vault into relevant threads I dont really see them getting lost in the mix.
4. All the subforum would do is it would be making things easier to find for BOINC issues. But so would not keeping everything in one thread.

I suggest that some of BOINC d00d's make a Sticky/FAQ for starters.
That alone should help with finding certain things.
Then when you have something to talk about start a thread, not just add to the chaotic mess that DC-vault currently is.

I can see maybe in the future having some subforums, but right now i just dont think that it is warranted.

We have the winners right here.

The amount of posts or whatever for one project doesn't mean jack. Discussion of all DC projects is welcome here. There may be only one official [H] project, but all other DC discussion is welcome.

Pushing BOINC into its own subforum would be nothing more than trying to segregate it. I don't care about the reasons or connotations anyone has with regards to that word. I only use that word because it means to separate. There is no reason to keep BOINC talk separate from F@H talk just as there was no reason to keep UD talk separate from F@H talk.

Besides, plenty of people run both. There's no reason to go through the regular part of DC for one project and then a sub-subform for another project. Just keep it all together as it is.

Final reason: There's no need for it. There are no problems as it is and I don't see any reason for problems to start. Even if there were problems or some started, a separate subforum sure as hell wouldn't fix any of them as they would be a lot deeper than a cosmetic fix.

Leave things alone and don't try to fix something which isn't broke.

I would love this. I almost feel like I'm going to be looked down upon by the FAH crew if I post in the DC section.

I've put this offer out before and I'll do so again.

If anyone, I'm talking one single person, ever bothers anyone about a DC project other than F@H in this forum, just send me a PM or something.

I will not tolerate a single member of a [H] DC team making fun of someone or talking down to someone for running a DC project other than the favorites around here. This especially includes a F@H DC member making fun of a BOINC DC member.

I've dealt with more than one instance of this before and I'll do it again in a heartbeat. No, I don't spend much time in DC anymore so I won't catch things like this on my own. However, I still won't put up with it.

Everyone is welcome here regardless of what project you choose.

2. Why is everything posted in DC-Vault?

We initially chose to keep it all to just the one thread to avoid stepping on anyone's toes and to avoid what we thought was going to be the inevitable brow beating that criccio referred to. There's no reason other than just habit at this point to keep growing the way out of control DC-Vault thread.

Though I can thankfully say that after a slightly rocky start, the Commandos have been at least tolerated if not accepted by most here. We even managed to get an initial opponent or two on board. :D

I didn't read the whole thread, and I haven't been around much lately, but.......

Isn't this called the "Distributed Computing" sub-forum? It's not the "F@H Only" sub-forum... right??

Thought so.

Just my opinion... take it for whatever it's worth.

Beers and tamales all... Fold On... DC On... Bionic On.. just crunch something if you can:)

I
Isn't this called the "Distributed Computing" sub-forum? It's not the "F@H Only" sub-forum... right??

Yes it is, but there are a few times that the phrase "Why are you not running F@H?" or "Well since it is not F@H ...." has been posted in som threads ....

Feedback so far is full of good information .... lets keep it going.

It is important to disucss this issue because it affects the entire team ....

While I agree, it would "seperate" some users ... it also would give them an area to post *more* freely .. More meaning not being overrun by F@H posts ....

To me, it is kinda a chicken & egg situatiuon ....
Can't grow the team without having info and topics easy to find & a place to post questions
Current number of users would be on the low side for sub-forum in DC area ...

Well I really dont like the BOINC name for the subforum if it goes that way.
It really makes that forum specific and there are so many projects out there that are not F@H.

OTOH

Since F@H is more prevelant would it be better to separate F@H into its own section, then have all the other projects, and general Folding Admin stuff in the Main DC area?
Kindal like the Video Card area.....The big boys have their respective area and then everything else in the Main area.

You are including peanuts and pretzels in that, right? They go great with my beer.

Bold flavored Chex mix is alright... has peanuts and pretzels, so that would be okay I guess.

I guess my feeling is that if this happens, it's going to "segregate" the forum a bit, so to speak. I personally enjoy reading up on the other projects. My point being is that I think it would make a real statement about the [H]orde if we all stood together as a team, regardless of the project, and helped each other out....

Just my opinion, maybe I'm missing something that runs a bit deeper, I dunno....

looks like the votes to close so it looks like we should keep unified.

The fact is this is the DC forum noylt F@H or Boinc. It's all encompassing.
