We are looking at putting together some good stuff for the new brothers and sisters for the [H]orde. We want to add more things to www.hardfolding.com to make it an even more valuable resource for our team, and for the folding community in general.

What we are looking for: People who know something about these topics to write articles on how to set the items up, or give a general walkthrough of what needs to be done to help all the new folks.

These are some of the topics I think would be cool to have for a new Technical Section for Folding on our site, feel free to add ideas in this thread, post information (step by step!) and we can format it nice and gift wrap it for King to post (to make his life easier!)

Topics:
-USB JumpDrive Folding Farms/Boxen
-CompactFlash Folding Farms/Boxen (Carnival Forces)
-How to make a naked tower of MB's (farm) (OSUguy98)
-An article going through pros/cons of HT and why you should/should not do it
(both sides I know there are many on both sides of the fence)
-An article about OC'ing and its effect on F@H/UD - ie how to set up memtest, prime 95 etc (unhappy_mage)
-LCD Case-Mod displays for F@H/UD stats (Herulach)
-linux/windows folding with one client under wine
-Helpful .bat files (start/stop service, config only, advmethods etc) (OSUguy98)

(feel free to add to the list)

Looks like a good list. I'll work on the "OCing and FAH" one unless someone calls it.

I'll fight you for it ;)

I would be stoked to read up on these articles, if/when they are put up. Hope some of our users out there put up some articles!

Meh, i just lost at Quake 3 to rj, 484 to 403. I don't play CS, or I'd be glad to go get my ass beat.

But I am writing the article. It even has screenshots! :D

NNNNNnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooo!

K* can i write the article about Flash memory farms? i'm not sure i know what you're asking for: is this it?

Well someone mentioned recently about making a farm using those ide => CF converters, or using usb drives (with linux etc)

whatever you got we will take

k. will start writing soon (gotta overcome inertia of inactivity first )

I dont have enough expertise to be writing on these topics, but I do have over 400 pages of academic writing experience in the past 6 years. I'd be happy to edit the draft versions for grammar, punctuation, etc. I could also provide draft feedback with a noobie's eye to help make certain these articles are as clear and coherent to new folders as they are to the experts. If there's any interest in such, of course. :)

Feel free to use The Numbers Game.
If you want to expand it, alter it, etc, etc, thats ok.
I can probably work out more numbers if you want.
Just let me know.

Luck............. :D

I can handle the .bat files,etc.... I already have my service batch files set up...

I could also do materials FOR said "naked tower of boxen"... as well as a couple sketches/drawings/plans for them (generic plans)....

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

What do you want to know about LCD displays? How to write the software? What software is suitable for it? I'm planning on integrating the code i wrote for my display into LCD smartie, so it can display current protein %complete, etc, instead of basically just whats on EOC. So if its something on those lines i can do it.

How to set up one yourself (DIY parts you need) along with a nice display for F@H or UD stats :)

I can do that, what kind of format are we talking? PLain text? Text w/html? pictures? Itll be a week or two, cos im in the middle of exams at the moment, but ill get onto it when im done next wednesday.

If we get it on HF.com, html should be fine.

Gah, I've got graduation practice tonight. Looks like I won't get much done with my article. But I do have 3 paragraphs done, and 4 screenshots!

Hooray for double posting!

Package of images+html is now up here. Get it while it's hot.

So, here is what we have so far:

unhappy_mage - OCing and FAH
Carnical Forces - Flash Card Farms
OSUguy98 - Batch Files and Naked tower of Boxen
Herulach - LCD Displays

Any other takers?

This is for the good of the team guys. C'mon! ;)

I hate to have you guys waiting for it, but I can probably coordinate a bit of a power review. i.e. kill-a-watt stuff. I have a somewhat broad set of hardware at my house.

As far as LCD guides, what do people want? It seems a bit redundant to just duplicate teh sticky from the case mod section, but if anyone has any specific questions they want answered, think other people would want answered post away or pm me.

Of course, what I'd really like is to be able to get multiple CPU information on an LCD. EMIII on LCD. I know that is more than you are thinking about. But I thought I would say what I really want.

Thats actually not particularly difficult to do. I already have mage's script to parse the log file from other machines, and once thats done then youre golden. But that would turn it into a programming tutorial rather than a LCD tutorial :).

As an aside, PSOne LCD + EM3 = exactly what you want, and in colour too :)

Any info on how that would work? (PSOne LCD that is)

From the LCD Sticky.
linky goodness
Never tried it myself, but a lot of people have, personally id put into a little console box on my desk if i were gonna do it. Only issue youd have would be getting it do display at the right size, em3 isnt resizeable unless im doing something wrong.

I dont have the knowledge in any of these cat. but i can tell you I would be VERY interested in a MB farm, or those USB farms. I am looking forward to that!!!

Thanks guys!!

If I ever get around to it, I was planning on working on a cd boot with network mounted storage and/or PXE booting(diskless in both cases).

This would save a bit of power, and hard drive noise wouldn't be there at all of course. I'll see if I get around to it like I've been planning for over a month. :D

Might be worth talking to mage about that, you have heard of foldserver no? I think it probably does everything you want it to already.

AS far as a CD boot, OVerclockix is Knoppix with folding set up by default, only thing is wus are stored in ram, so no persistence between reboots.

An article going through pros/cons of HT and why you should/should not do it
I would be willing to tackle this one. Are you just looking for an article listing the pros/cons of running two instances vs one or one including general HT affects on folding systems?

After the 10th of June I will be able to write an article about the best platforms to use for folding...i'm talking about the whole nine yards meaning getting tons of information about how certain processors fold on certain proteins from [h], oc.com and ocau...and compiling it all...

Looking at the reasons its good and bad, reasons for each,
quick guide to set it up (can probably just take it from the
FAQ or link it) and Stanfords stance on it, just so people
see the differences and can make in informed decision!

When/If I figure out how to run UD under Wine, I'll write that one.

If someone figures it out first, by all means go ahead.

I think a n00b guide to setting up and running EMIII might not be a bad idea. I'd be willing to throw something like that together, might not be til the 12th or so when I get internet back at the homestead. But I'll do what I can. Might need to be looked at for proof-reading, I'm from Indiana where grammar is like polotics, the less we know about it, the happier we are.

Fold on fellas!

looking at [H]folding, i think rogue_jedi already did this? (http://www.hardfolding.com/index.php?go=34)

Where do we stand on this stuff? Who has got some stuff done?

We want to start getting some of this to King_N for the site.
