Hello.

I've been trying to solve a mystery and I've pretty much solved it except for the explanation which I think I know too. I guess I just need confirmation more than help on a mystery.

I'll start from the top and try to be short:
(You can skip this if you want)

My camera can take TIF+JPG pix. I went to transfer existing pix from my camera to my computer off the card that was in the camera and in the camera bag.

Noticed the JPG's were coming out fine but the TIF's were looking like negatives almost. Not quite the correct color scheme for a negative or even inverted pic though. At least I never tried inverting the screwy pic to see if that was what happened to the TIF's.

Anyways, I figured 4 things could be wrong. The cards, the camera, the memory card reader, or a combination of the three.

I dismissed the cards and memory card reader because the reader was brand new and I've been ONE of the cards for a few years and the other two for only 2.5 years. So I decided to take the quick way out and buy a new camera.

Then it occurred to me. My camera was left in the winter cold for several days if not weeks. It could have very well been the camera and it could have been the cards too, but I never had a personal case of temperature affecting flash media. But something told me that that was probably it and I can't trust the cards and/or the camera.

I remembered one of the cards I had had a pic I KNEW was just fine a few months ago. Maybe the cards were just affected and not the camera.

Then I remembered I had the original 16MB card that wasn't affected by weather. I decided to take a pic with that to see what would happen. TIF came out fine.

So, I *think* I've concluded that both my 2GB PNY SD 133x cards and my 1GB SanDisk Extreme III card are fried from extreme weather conditions and the camera works just fine and now I'm stuck with a new camera twice as powerful than my current one that I'm attached to now so I can't send it back. Grrrr.

Does weather really affect flash media?

Could there still be a problem with the camera?

Can the damaged SD cards be fixed and be made reliable again?

I can still take pictures with them but the TIF's come out weird while the JPG's come out fine. But why does random computer files copy onto the cards and back onto the computer come out fine?

Is there anything else I can test to make sure that the damage is limited to the cards if the cards really are the cause?

BTW, old camera is Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20. New camera is Fuji HS10.

EXTREME cold may affect flash media but don't quote me on that.
Problem could still be the camera
Probably not if that is the issue since damage to flash media is rather permanant
Not sure

Something you didn't make clear: Did you test the PNY and the SanDisk cards with the new camera? Same issue with TIFF files?

Ah, I didn't think about testing the cards in question with the new camera. Thanks for the tip. I shall try. I shall also try my new SDHC SanDisk Class 10 8GB card with the old camera as well and report my findings.

Yeah try it out and report back. Might be interesting or straightforward.
