Hello all,

I have an old P5B-Plus that I believe is crapping out on me and I am looking for a replacement. I love Asus' but I don't care if I venture out of that brand. I would like to use my old parts for it as they really aren't that bad.

Here's what I have to reuse:
E6600 Dual Core Duo
2 Gb DDR PC2-6400 Ram
and I have a pci-e 2.0 vid card (which the p5b+ doesn't support fully)

I am looking for a board that has the pci-e 2 and a gigabit network. I need ide and sata. Also, onboard 4 channel or better audio is a must.

I have found two boards:

ASUS P5G41-M LE/CSM LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131399

- and -

GIGABYTE GA-P43-ES3G
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128447

But it occurs to me, should I get a new board or just start over with a ddr3 board. Cost does play a factor but I don't want to dump a ton of money into an older set up anyway.

Opinions on a board? Maybe you have an idea of another?

Thanks,

Josh

At $93 shipped, that GA-P43-ES3G is a piss poor buy.

The G41 chipset did not have PCI-E 2.0. However this is a non-issue for most single GPU setups.

If you live near a Microcenter or buying from Newegg after the first 4-5 days of the new month, it doesn't make much sense to buy a $60 socket 775 mobo that uses DDR3 RAM. Microcenter often have AMD CPU + mobo combos for $100 to $110 with the CPUs often being far faster than the E6600. Newegg also have AMD CPU + mobo combo deals, though not at cheap as Microcenter's deals sometimes, where you can still get a significantly faster CPU + mobo for only $40 to $50 more than that $60 Gigabyte.

So in other words, since the costs of upgrading to a new CPU + mobo is only $40 to $50 more than if you were just getting that Gigabyte GA-G41M-Combo mobo but with a significantly huge performance increase, that Gigabyte GA-G41M-Combo would not be a good idea unless you really really can't spend $40 to $50 more for a better AMD CPU + mobo setup.

I think your best bet would be to pick up a used socket 775 mobo off Craigslist or even in the For Sale/ For Trade subforum we have. I've seen quite a few socket 775 mobos with PCI-E 2.0 for around $35 to $50 from both sources.

IMHO, I agree with Danny. Getting a new motherboard for such an old CPU for that much money is very much akin to putting lipstick on a pig. The prices for both of those LGA 775 mobos are now far higher new than they are worth.

I agree on a new mobo/cpu as well & probably new ram too.. The e6600 & 2gb ddr2 isnt enough to make putting more money into the current setup worth it.. If you had a q9550 & 4 or 8gb ram it would be a different story. But with what you have...

I currently have only 2 gb ram bc I am running XP. I know it doesn't really utilize more than that (well, 3) so I thought might as well not waste the money.

Btw, how do the onboard video of the mentioned boards compare to a gt 240 with 512 ddr5 ram? Should I just stick with the onboard? It'd be stupid to put in the card and slow down my system. lol.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Maybe the asus board but the biostar doesn't have a pci-e 2 or a gigabit network. Price isn't that much of a problem but I would like to keep it all under 200.

The onboard video is still slower than your GT 240.

The Biostar mobo does have PCI-E 2.0 as that's a standard feature of that chipset. In addition, the Realtek 8111DL NIC that it has IS Gigabit.
