My Thinkpad x200's drive died today (...) and I need a replacement. Suggestions? It needn't be particularly large or fast, just reliable and affordable (<$100, the cheaper the better). I'll probably install Ubuntu on it.

Can't remember if the X200 takes a 1.8 or a 2.5 inch disk... If 2.5, go with a Scorpio Black. They rock. if 1.8, see if you can find a used Intel X25-M SSD. Avoid the Toshiba drives.

If it uses a 1.8 drive, i really would suggest an ssd.

I upgraded the SSD on my x300 and it made a world of difference. I upgraded to an intel x25.

On ebay, you can find HP branded x-25 SSDs that work with the Thinkpads. There's also a guy on ebay that sells manufacturer refurbished Crucial C300 drives (128GB) which are even faster than the Intel SSDs. You can get either drive for ~$100.

Agree on suggestion above to avoid old Toshiba SSD or the older Samsung SSDs.
