Replace my Fortron 530?

The noise is finally getting on my nerves. This thing is LOUD when playing games or even if it gets moderately hot in my apartment.

I've delt with it for years and I'm finally sick of it. What can I replace it with that is quiet and will run the rig in my sig?

I built this box back in 2004.

OR any way I can disable the fan from turning on high?

Have you done the fanmod? Basically, this unit has a little bit of a design flaw on that intake fan placement. In cramming it up against the heatsinks, no airflow gets over to the secondary side parts. If you bolt the intake fan to the outside of the enclosure instead of the inside, the unit will get better cooling and run quieter.

That said, it's amazing it's run for so long on such a high 12V crossload. It was designed for heavy 5V loads rather than 12V. A Corsair VX550 will easily replace it.

So it's about time for this thing to kick the bucket anyway?

I'm not looking to spend more than about 30 or 40 on a new PS.

in the 30-40 range wait for the earthwatts 380w to go on sale again, or the corsair 400cx is 50fs with a 20 dollar rebate(my recommendation), or the pc power and cooling PPCS370X is 45fs. Of these psus I've used a ton of the antecs and one of the corsairs, and have never been dissapointed with either, the pcpower and cooling I havent used because normally it is the more expensive one, all these prices are from newegg. All of them will easily power your system, and are 80plus certified.

The thing is probably running less than a 20% load, so it's not that surprising.

Have a look at these:

Both should be extremely quiet.

It's a quality PSU with enough capacity to power your rig, and it will be quiet while doing so. There's nothing particularly special about it, but it is inexpensive and fits your requirements.

I guess I've been out of the game for awhile. Never even heard of them. I appreciate your help!!

Seasonic has been around for a very long time and is probably the most consistently good PSU manufacturer out there.

Question, is it possibly to make this Fortron that is in my case quieter than it is now? Can I control that rear fan somehow? It's driving me crazy. I haven't even been playing games or anything at all, it just starts up from regular ole web browsing, etc.

Follow Oklahoma Wolf's suggestion from earlier and that should make the fan run quieter.

Gotta link for the mod?

You don't need a link, he told you exactly how to do it. Just take off the PSU cover, unscrew the fan, and remount it on the outside of the PSU casing facing in the same direction that it was before.

Picked up the Corair over at Fry's.

Going to throw it in there tonight. Anyone want this Fortron?
