Removing GPU shroud lowers temperatures?

Had a friend tell me just now that taking the shroud off a GPU's cooler lowers temperatures by 10-15 degrees. Is this true or is he just saying nonsense? :)
 
It depends.

If your case is well ventilated, and the cooler is a nonforced air type, then yes.

EDIT: What I meant be that, is most dual slot coolers with fan on one far end, rely on that shroud for cooling.

Some, with the fan right above the GPU, don't need that shroud, but it's nice to have it.

It depends on the cooler design, too.

I know all Zalman coolers are 'open'

EDIT2:

Example: the 4850x2 cooler from Sapphire can do well, maybe better, with the shroud off. It's restrictive, and has a 'hot spot' inbetween the 2 GPU.

The 9800GTX cooler, on the other hand, requires the shroud to force air through the HS fins. Without it, stuff doesn't move.

yup exactly what jeremy said.. it all depends on the cooler type and the cooling within the case..

Okay, in this case it's about a GTX275 with the standard radial fan pushing air through the heatsink fans out of the back. In this case removing the shroud would be a bad idea, right?

Nope. Not a good idea. That is a forced air setup, and it needs that shroud.

Now, back to saving up for that triple-fan Arctic Cooling replacement HSF :D
