I have a Thermalright XP-90 that I got a couple years back for my current system. I'm going to be building a new one and I'll probably just want to keep using this HSF for now and see how it does. The problem is, the X-shaped metal bracket is attatched the to the rear of the mobo with some kind of adhesive thing. I tried prying it off with some medium force but it wouldn't budge. I guess since the mobo is probably bad I won't mind much if I break it, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to remove this and reuse it on another board.

Heat it up with a hair dryer. Be SURE to use a pop-sickle stick or something else like that between the board and whatever you use to pry it up with. Warm the whole area and then with the hair dryer pointed at one end of the X, gently with constant easy force keep heating and gently prying until that edge becomes unstuck and continue heating and working along that leg of the x. Slow, steady, easy, and protect the motherboard and it will peel right off in time.

I took a quick look but could not find an extra X backplate but I am sure you can find one if you want to go that way, check the sites below and you might email thermalright too, they have a pretty good rep for supporting customers. Also fabricating one out of fairly thick (1/4 inch) acrylic or some other stiff plastic would not be too much of a chore. Be sure the insulation etc is not damaged on the old one, A layer of electrical tape would do but it would not stick to the new board and you will have to install the heatsink before you put the board in the case (which is not a bad thing, easier to make sure it is not hitting board components etc. )

Thanks for the info, I tried that and it worked good. It left a square strip of adhesive stuff on the old mobo... the area on the backpiece where that was is still a little sticky. I assume this will be ok?
