remote desktop software ?

For my htpc I used realvnc to connect to load things up. Otherwise, there's windows built in RDP software. There's a patch floating around that lets you have separate desktops when using RDP.

I've also used Dameware in the past which is a feature rich remote tool.

i should have added

i normally use my laptop around campus via wifi, and i am hoping i can access and do stuff on my desktop which is back at my apartment

The simplest setup I have seen with SSL is LogMeIn. You create an account and install their software on the desktop and your set. http://www.logmein.com

Not only that but the connection speed/compression is better than any RDP I have used.

Generaly people say log me in is slower then the direct rdp connection. Interesting you've seen it work the other way.

To the OP. Depending on how your school has it setup something like logmein is prob the best way to go. I know with my school they have most non-standard ports blocked which stops me from using rdp. In my case I use my evdo card.

I use UltraVNC. Great and easy to setup, except you kinda have to refresh the screen pretty often -- can anyone vouch for a better remote desktop program that doesn't have this issue?

We use RealVNC at work, and it works very well. If it's an option though RDP is the best program I've come across.

In my opinion, TightVNC is much better than both RealVNC and UltraVNC. I tried all three and TightVNC was EASILY the fastest, plus it had scaling options.

go with logmein.... 2 min setup and thats it. no real configuration of ANYTHING needed.

In a LAN setting, I agree. I use TightVNC on my systems and it seems to work better than anything else I've used. I used RealVNC for a good long while until I tried out TightVNC. It was a quick and easy switch as far as I'm concerned. It has both Windows and Linux clients and probably others. It's been a while since I looked and I only use the Windows and Linux versions anyway.

VNC is great.

If you're looking for something more along the lines of the MMC Snap-in that lets you have multiple connections (like for server management), there's a great freeware app out there called visionapp which I highly recommend.
