ok, I have never done anything like this before so I am kind of a noob. Are there any good guides on how to hook up your computer to start with a remote control? Also what kind of remote would i need? Where to buy?

You're probably looking for something like WinXP MCE instead of the regular WinXP Home/Pro. That's all the help I have to offer right now :).
