How many of you guys had the awesome Dreamcast? I really miss this console, but not really because I still play it on a regular basis and I have over 125 original games plus a shitload of homebrew games for it. Dreamcast had so many quality games, a straightforward controller and was just great. It was the first console to really push online gaming, and it did it well. It was more powerful the the PS2. It was just a great console and I just want to see how many people have one and what they think of it. My best memories are just playing some of the crazy games I got, like Space Channel 5, or the sega sports games, which of course were better than anything else at the time, the RPGs, Grandia 2 and Skies of Arcadia (both dupicated on other systems, but crappily ported or changed drastically), adventure games like shenmue and sonic adventure. I could keep going and going becuase there were so many actaully good games released for the dreamcast, unlike most games that are released today on current systems which are 90% filth, 5% Ok, and 5% good. What do you guys remember about the trusty white box?

I still miss the Sega Saturn more than the Dreamcast, though. DragonForce, Albert Odyssey, ah!

this is why i keep my old snes, nes, and n64. and the virtual boy :) and theres a sega genesis as the cottage.

you can still pick up used dream casts at EB for about $25. that is where i got mine and it is a really fun system

Agreed. The Saturn was a far better machine than the Dreamcast. I like my DC, but developers and the market treated it as a PSX port repository while waiting for the PS2 to launch.

Lately I've been going back, trying to find some old Saturn games to fill in my collection. I'm tempted to find Dragon Force, but it's probably going for more than Valkyrie Profile, and Working Designs is trying to get the US rights to the Sega Ages version, so I'll see how that goes. I'm thinking of Burning Rangers, and maybe Albert Odyssey.

On a side note, it's amazing how far one company can fall thanks to just one decision. Way to go, Sega. You ceded the market to Sony and don't seem to know what to do as a third party.

I'm still a fan of my nes. Never owned a Dreamcast, but I play a lot of the dreamcast games off of my xbox.

i remember buying two VMU's and then feeling ripped off a few hours later

I got one on 9/9/99 after seeing some japanese imports at an anime convention earlier in the year. I got Soul Calibur and Power Stone (among others) and they were fantastic games. I think I had about 30 games by the time they stopped production. I even had the fabled Broadband Adapter (ethernet card) which I got specifically for Phantasy Star Online.

I really enjoyed playing with my Dreamcast. I used to sneak it into work and play there. I even got written up for hooking it up to the video conferencing system, but I didn't care.

Playing dreamcast was like holding an atari controller. that dang thing was huge. thats why i refuse to buy an xbox. well.........i kinda have no excuse now. they got smaller joy sticks

I still got the first nintendo for Tecmo Bowl

Super Nintendo for Madden 97

Sega Game Gear for World Series

.................Dang I got a lot of consoles in my house.

two words: power stone.
god, i enjoyed that game!

/me whips out dreamcast

Ready to Rumble and Soul Caliber got me playing Dreamcast but I much like Soul Caliber two on Game Cube.

*cryin missing my game cube*

It pains me to say this, but I was at one time.....

A Dreamcast fan-boy

I'm glad to have those days behind me. Great system though.

dreamcast sud of been a success, i dont know why cuz quit a few people had it!!!!

shenmue IMO IS THE BETST GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MADE........................................

i realy do hope sega make a new console or at least make some new original games cuz recently they aint made sh!t

powerstone!!!! and PS 2. cant forget crazy taxi either. and gotta like the NFL Blitz games..

kinda sad really cuz i cleaned out my room the other day and boxed up my dreamcase, and left my gamecube hooked up.....this thread makes me wanna pull out my DC again. for those times when BF2 is pissin me off and i wanna get retro.

Powerstone series, and crazy taxi, and marvel vs capcom2....too many hours spent wasted on those....ahh, grandia 2 as well. awesome games they were......yup, when i get home tonite im pullin out the DC with my two VMU';s...cool thing is i was able to download VMU icons off the net long time ago...and they have bud leafs as icons for my VMU's hahahahaha all my buddies loved that shit

Dreamcast was the pwnage. I still have mine with all the games. I still play Soul Calibur. What an amazing system.

I got my DC at launch too, I still have my black sega dreamcast t shirt. I love the system, although I don't play it much anymore (i have 3 kids now). I have over 60 games for it, 5-6 controllers, keyboard/mouse , fishing rod, 2 light guns 6-7 VMUs etc.

Wouldn't it be funny if Nintendos secret revolution controller was just a rehash of the VMU concept? That would be ironic and funny. Whats really ironic though, is how the media would drool allover it and proclaim it as a completely original concept, since most of the gaming medias supposedly gamers didn't start till the ps2 was in its 2nd gen of titles.

what exactly was the vmu neway?

OMG, I can't believe u don't know what the VMU is! AAHH, it's a sweet removable memory card that goes into the controller and has a little screen on it. You can also put minigames on it. It was a great addition to games, especially sports cuz you could pick your plays on the controller! Oh and I forgot a game I loved:

SEAMAN! oh yes, I beat it, without cheating! What a game!

Ah, Dreamcast. So many nights of sitting in my living room staring wide eyed at the screen as sonic the hedgehog ran to and fro. So many nights sitting, drooling, as i lapsed in and out of a Crazy Taxi induced coma. How i miss the days. Stupid brother had to make it a linux box and now it doesnt even have the ability to play power stone. DAMN YOU PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE THINGS OUT OF OTHER THINGS. DAMN YOU TO HELL!!! and im talking the kind of hell where the only thing to eat is cheeze-its for eternity. i recently hooked up my n64 and started to play some games. I got about half way through my collection when superman 64 popped into the slot, and i nearly threw up.

I have a DreamCast sitting in my closet with a few games, if anyone is interested just PM me.

I bought one when they were on the way out. I payed $50 for it. After playing a few games I couldn't see why that system wasn't selling. The games were awesome. I think piracy is was really hurt the system in that you didn't even need a mod chip to play backups.

It wasn't the piracy; the Dreamcast lost a ton of third-party developer support when the PS2 was looming over the horizon. They believed that the system would become quickly outdated and no one would buy it anyway, so they dropped all of their projects. It's something of a self-fulfilling prophecy because the Dreamcast would have held up pretty well against the PS2 if it had the same support.

aah, thank god for emulators... :D

Now all i need to do is rip Crazy Taxi and Jet Grind (or Set if u live somewhere other than America) Radio to my PC and i'll be set for life...

The one game that sticks out in my mind when I think of the DC was Test Drive Le Mans. 24(!) cars on-screen at once with 3 car classes running, real-time weather (downpours), day/night transitions, glowing brake rotors before it was cool, backfires, perfect physics simulation including wind resistance, tire wear, fuel usage and ultra realistic AI that puts anything Gran Turismo offers, even now, to shame (not saying much). Best lap times were had with the tank nearly empty.

It was fun to park on a hill facing traffic and watch the AI cars see you at the last second and swerve in a panic or if you wandered too close to them side-by-side on a straightaway, they would swerve to avoid you. During a race, they were relentless in trying to pass you. Totally not like the oblivious AI in GT. You could even simulate a true, real-time 24 hour race if you were crazy enough to do 300+ laps in one sitting! How the DC did 24 cars, great graphics, super physics and killer sound is amazing. If only Forza had the Le Mans track, I could try to beat my best lap of 3:24 to see how well it matches.

I spent so much money on the DC. There were countless other games I both loved and marveled at, such as Ferrari F355, Quake III Arena, Guilty Gear and all those Capcom/SNK 2D fighters esp. SF Alpha 3 (best ever), Soul Calibur, Outtrigger, Sega Sports games, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Tennis, Virtua-On, Virtua-Cop, Confidential Mission, Phantasy Star, Toyko Xtreme Racer 2, House/Typing of the Dead, Sonic games, Chu Chu Rocket, Samba de Amigo, Giga-Wing, Jet Grind Radio...just way too many to mention.

Many of them could pass today for good PS2 games. The DC was waaaay underrated due to being killed by the PS2 hype machine and maybe this is why I have a slight anti-PS3 bias. Dreamcast...now there was a pure gaming system.

the same reason i dont like Sony Playstation. in my mind they killed the DC. i mean it rocked the ps2 but the hype machine killed it....pisses me off to this day all my friends ran out and got a ps2 and said the dc sucked. but the best part is, theyve all had their PS die and been replaced, one person has gone thru 4 of em so far, wherte my DC is still runnin strong.

Well, DC is the closest thing to the arcade version of dun dun dun dun dun......................

Streetfighter: 3rd Strike

'nuff said. That game alone makes the DC worth $25 for me. :D

Ya know, this is one of the big reasons I don't like EA. They didn't produce one single, solitary game for the DC. Nada. Zilch. Their reasoning, supposedly, was that they got burned on the Saturn deal. But come on, now. The DC was the first monumental (as in staggering increases in graphics/sound/AI) leap in overall gaming quality since the NES. It truly was "next-gen". Graphics, audio, AI, physics, nothing at the time (including the hot-rod PC's of 1999) could even think about comparing to it. Not to mention a workable online strategy. But EA, with their boycott, doomed the DC from the beginning. All of the great franchises that could have helped sell consoles never appeared. Madden on the DC would have brought any PS1 fan--boy to his knees, where the NFL2K series couldn't bring them around. In my opinion, the 2K pigskin games have always beaten the pants off Madden in terms of graphics, presentation and gameplay; maybe that's why EA bought the NFL rights.

Anyway, my rant's almost done. If you want my opinion, Sony and EA had something worked out to keep the DC in check till the PS2 was launched. EA passed on a ton of money when they passed on the DC. I still wonder why.

I'll hafta break out the ole Dreamcast this weekend, and relive some of my early 20's. You can call me a loser old man, if ya want, but I'll still be having more fun than you :D

This thread is almost making me cry. The state of the industry is extremely painful when the only things I bring to a friend's lake house are my Dreamcast, a past generation now dead console, and my computer... for EMULATORS. Of course, that only occupies our evenings since there's a lake to enjoy, but all the same.

I miss this thing. I should check up on the home brew community again. It'd be sweet to get some new DC games.

Out of curiosity. Does anyone happen to have a Broadband adapter they can part with? :) I never had an opportunity to grab one.

Ahhh, the dreamcast. I bought one and a few games for $50 off a friend back in 2001. My favorite game was Gundam Side Story 0079. Though I did probably have about 40-50 hours of Crazy Taxi play time. :D My DC's disc reader stopped working though. No more games for me. :(

I'm not selling my BBA, thats like the rarest peice of game hardware I have. I loved Virtua Tennis, that was a kickass game. Chu Chu Rocket was sweet too, but hard to find people to play with. If only EA wouldn't have fucked them in the goatass , they might have had a chance. All they had to do was port the PC version of Madden (totally easy) and they would have probably outsold the 2k football game. We will never know what the system was capable of. Valve had captivation studios make a port of HL for it, supposedly it was even going to have CS as the online multiplayer. That could have made such an impact for them back then, but it didn't get finished before Sega gave up on the system.

The other day I dusted it off and played some Soul Calibur on it with my wife. It looks just as good as the sequel on the xbox IMHO. Alas poor Dreamcast , we hardly knew you.

Makes me wonder how the DC would have fared if Microsoft had bought Sega. With MS's muscle, DC might have stood a chance.

On a side note, I don't recall too many hardware debates back then for the DC as with today's 360/PS3. I guess now that we're all a little wiser to Sony's tricks we're more skeptical and vigilant of such hype.

The Dreamcast was an excellent system. The first game I played on it was Sonic Adventure which is still one of my favorite games. No game but Conker's Bad Fur Day has given me as much fun with non-internet multiplayer as Power Stone 2. Playing with three other people on that game is a blast! My brother and my mom's boyfriend's sons and I would play that game for hours day after day and start screaming at each other and laughing like crazy non-stop...it was so much fun.

Oh and has anyone here played Seaman? Gamespot didn't like it too much, but that is one of the few times they have been dead wrong. Seaman was such an awesome game. I'll never forget when I let my friend play and he was like "Seaman marry me!" and Seaman responded, "Sorry, Seaman don't play that way." He also asked cool questions such as whether the world would be better off with or without religion, and made fun of the English language and its use of phrases such as "one of the tallest buildings in the world."

And you can throw all the technical specs at me that you want, but the PS2 doesn't even look that much better than the Dreamcast anyway. Its games do indeed look better but not that much better. I still remember when everyone started to believe all of Sony's hype and started thinking that the Dreamcast was totally obselete. The time Sony declared that the PS2 would handle up to 50 times more 3-D image data than the Dreamcast comes to mind.

I feel like pulling out my Dreamcast again after reading this topic but unfortunately I don't have my TV anymore...

The game I still play most on the Dreamcast is Space Channel 5. I absolutely love that game. I can sit down and have a quick playthrough of the game. Other than that I loved Chu-Chu Rocket and Jet Grind Radio.
