**** EDIT - NVIDIA SURROUND doesn't work across two monitors for gaming-

I bought a Gigabyte 680 OC - 2 GB model and received it today. I have always purchased NVidia cards except last spring I purchased an ATI 7770 to tide me over for a while.

I have dual monitors - two LG 22" and I could play games and span them on both monitors and I had always been an NVidia "fanboy".

Well my experience with ATI was pleasant and I just about pulled the trigger on a 7970, when I decided to get the cream of the crop (as I thought it were) a 680 and have "PhysX" for you know Borderlands 2 etc.

Well long story short is that I am no more than 30 minutes into hooking up and owning the card "Gigabyte 680 OC - 2 GB" that I want to severely "return" / get rid of.

Multi-monitor gaming is so much of a better experience on the ATI series - What happened to Nvidia? They used be on top of the game.

I know some of you are thinking - get a third monitor? I really don't want to plop down another 300 - 500 dollars buying a triple display stand and monitor. I was happy with two. Can't some of us be happy with just two monitors instead of triple.

I don't know if I'm speaking for the crowd, but I've been to these forums for a long time and wanted to 'loudly' voice my concerns so that maybe someone else will read about my misfortunes with two monitors and Nvidia, even if I'm echoing something that's already been talked about. Because It will / could make a huge difference in their purchasing decisions.

----- Thinking about going back to a single monitor (3d capable for gaming 27"+) and having one 23" accessory monitor in portrait mode.

Thanks for hearing me out.

What exactly is the problem? Read post twice, still don't know what the problem is. Doesn't work at all with 2 monitors? Or?

You play games across 2 monitors?? Isn't it hard/annoying to have that bezel right down the middle?

This.

Brb gonna post about something that I don't like without mentioning why......:confused::confused:

I'm not saying it's not annoying, but I don't really want a third monitor right now and I was happy with bezel adjust etc. I am really annoyed that Nvidia doesn't even give me the option to game across two monitors with the bezel in the middle.

Why in hell would you game across 2 monitors? I have 0 issues running 3 monitors in nvsurround and compared to my ATI 6950's it was easier to setup and in general works better.

he's full of it.

its rather sad to see these kind of posts.

this thread should be locked.

Maybe he doesn't mind gaming across 2 monitors with a bezel in the middle. It's just software; why doesn't Nvidia support it? Got to be easier than 3 monitor support. Not a fanboy of either camp. :)

maybe because two monitor gaming is stupid.

Ha ha whatever floats his boat. Not everyone thinks the same way. He should just return the card and get what works for him. I used to play Supreme Commander and it allowed me to run the main game on my #1 monitor and I had my HUD on my other monitor. It didn't bother me in the slightest.

lets put eye glasses frames right down the middle of the lenses.

i think it will change the world, or maybe that is what Nvidia thinks of it.

So playing Supreme Commander and having the main game on one monitor and your HUD on the other is wrong? I'd like to hear why. :)

I didn't know anyone actually gamed on 2 monitors. I have 2 monitors, and I'm not even tempted in the least bit to try it. It sounds like a terrible idea.

Becacuse Nvidia doesnt care about you loving to have Supreme Commander's HUD away from your main display.

or maybe Nvidia didnt start as a company for Supreme Commander or you.

Sorry, I couldnt resist.

That has nothing to do with Surround or Eyefinity support however but a specific game implementation. That type of support you saw from Supreme Commander would have to be left up to the game developer.

Both Surround and Eyefinity refer to spanning across multiple displays so they are treated as one larger display essentially.

i just finished searching the Google images for eye glasses with lens frame down the middle and came up empty, that is it, i am selling my computer and turning off my internet.

That aside, I don't see why the OP shouldn't be able to do whatever he wishes, it's his choice. Some of us may think running multi monitors in Portrait mode is goofy, so who's to say running it with just two screens is any different. Yea you can wrap it in any sort of logic you want, because I'm not saying that having the bezel mid-view might not be odd, but I commend him for overcoming that.

Not all of us are rich enough to afford such lavish gaming setups :)

A quick search on google will show people that have debezeled their 'dual' monitors *as well as triple etc* but dual--- to make the gap almost non-existant. I don't really see what's wrong with dual's if setup properly.

Because the gap is still existent and in one of the most critical areas of the screen?

nice find, lol. maybe we should get it photoshopped where its at least 2 inches thick on both lenses so it looks even more silly.

no pics of shutter shades for multi-multi monitor gaming? I'd gladly trade my 7870 for your 680. Both companies have their strong and weak points.

Shouldn't the frame be going vertically down the lens?

This thread is amusing.

This has been around for a while it really came about because of vista. When vista came out they eliminated the span option in the nvidia drivers and windows display preferences (I have a feeling this was a Microsoft push). Because of this the best you could do was "extend" which is ttreated as 2 separate displays... the work around was to run the game in window mode.

It really was unfortunate they made this move, as a big flight simmer it really was inconvenient.

What is sad is that at the time the official word from nvidia was we aren't going yo support this. It sounds like they are still taking that stance.

If you can run your game in a borderless window and force the dual monitor resolution

+1 to this - I'll try it out

It might not be 2 inches, but that'd have been way more manipulative work than I wanted to put into it lol (looks hastily made enough the way it is heh)

hah Yea, but it was hard enough to figure the right search terms to even find that goofy arsed lens! :P Which popped up in just my third search as luck would have it (bisected lens frame)

Sorry for the derailing , OP. :o

lol? than stick to one monitor until you can have three.
gaming on 2 monitors, that sounds ridiculous.

how would you play FPS games with 2 monitors? You'd be aiming right where the bezel is...

dumb. Save up for 3 monitors and do it right.

It wouldn't be practical for FPS. Would work great with flight simulators as mentioned above.

Who the hell game with dual monitor? Imagine BF3 crosshair in between your bezel. Dafug. How is that even possible.

For most games two monitor's span is pretty silly, but it could work for flight simulators and possibly RTS. To be honest though Nvidia's surround is lacking when it comes to features. It doesn't have profiles like AMD's eyefinity so you have to go through the display setup every time you want to turn on and off surround (span vs multiple displays).

This - I agree, I thought that Eyefinity was setup much better overall from the software standpoint on multi-monitor setups: regardless of wether I wanted to game on two monitors, one, three, etc. It would let me do it and with little or no hassle.

I just don't get that experience from Nvidia. I guess that's where most of my frustration(s) came from. Even if people think it's weird to game on two side by side.

Not a fair example. SupCom was designed with dual monitor support right out of the box and it's an RTS which lends itself to this type of gameplay. Being able to follow 2 areas of the battlefield simultaneously like a General in a CP is not like playing a shooter with a huge bezel right down the middle of your FOV, but it's his call. There used to be a span mode a long time ago but it hasn't been in the drivers for quite some time. I believe there's still some software hacks available to set it up. I did it about 3 years ago but it was quite a bit of a hassle if I remember correctly. If he doesn't want to go 3 monitors then yes I'd agree with his other option of a 27" 2560 x 1440 and a 23" in portrait on the side for page reading, etc.
