So,
I'm going through the RMA process for one of my last 4TB WD Red drives that is still under warranty (expires in April) and I noticed that the RMA terms are that if once I receive the new drive, I don't return the old one, I will be charged some ridiculously small amount (I think it was $62.50)
I presume they are replacing the RMA returns with refurb drives, and that's why the cost is so low.
My question is, if I am willing to live with the lower reliability and having to replace these drives more often, is there a way to outright buy these refurb drives at that price?
I could use to expand the number of drives in my old backup server, and I don't really feel like buying new drives for it, when the existing 12 are all older ones.
At this price, I'd have no problem living without warranty, and just paying out of pocket for a new one when they need to be replaced.
