Reducing CPU usage on GPU client

I'm folding with a 4870 at the moment on Windows XP, and it takes up about 90% of a core on my i7 920 at 3.6GHz. This is slowing down the SMP clients I run on my CPU quite a bit, the client running on the same cores as the GPU client is about 1300ppd lower than the SMP client running without. So is there a way to reduce the CPU utilization of the GPU client, or am I stuck with this unfavourable situation? I heard that there was a way to reduce it to about 20% of a core for Vista, but I haven't heard of any such modifications for XP.

Thanks

Welcome to ATI folding. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a fix for XP that actually works.

At this moment there is no XP fix..... Although I did hear they were working on one, but right now its not ready.

Welcome to folding with ATI btw! :)

you could try setting the gpu client priority to idle and set the VM to below normal.. and see if that helps..

Shit, so much for that. Sorry bro, only other advice would be to play around with affi ities like the others said

Ah. So there's no way for XP to lower CPU usage? That's a pity. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to live with it. Thanks guys.

It isn't XP's fault. It's the GPU2 client and, specifically, the cores for ATI cards that is the problem.

is this true for all the ATI cards? i would imagine 3xxx and 4xxx for sure, but what about the 5xxx series? and is this not being addressed in the coming release? /fingerscrossed

Not yet. Heck, 5000 series official recognition is not in yet (iirc - mine doesn't arrive 'till this weekend).

GPU3 is going through a major redevelopment using a new platform.

It is a super pitty since there are so many deals on mid range gpus that could be put to good use if there were a fix to this problem.

Even with lower CPU usage, a $45 9600GSO puts out more points than just about any ATI GPU. As far as ATI GPUs and F@H are concerned, there really aren't any good deals.

More is the pity.

the upcoming GPU3...will it be backward compat to 2x00/3x00? it sure would be nice to get some moar ppd outta my 3850. its a nice card, just does not come anywhere near my 9600

At the moment there really is no such thing as a good deal on an ATI folding GPU. It just plain doesn't exist. At every single price point there is an equivalent NVidia GPU which beats the living daylights out of its ATI counterpart in terms of folding..

There has been nothing new on the ATI front in months ...
I am not really sure what is going on at this point as far as development ...

There are many issues that just kinda got left hanging and nothing has been done to fix them.

I am only guessing that all the work it being put towards GPU3 (OPENCL)
I assume they have taken the current cores to a certain level and can't go any further.

Even nVidia has stopped with core updates, except the new one that fixes the mis-match GPUs.

What makes any decision hard is not knowing what is coming up or going to change.

But as of right now, nVidia is 3x better for Folding@home then ATI hardware.
