i work in that lovely little tech center at ur local staples heh... i had a customer come in with a possible dead laptop HDD.. there was no way i was seeing this on any machine.. i was wondering are there someone who could throw some links out to some companies that specialize in recovering data off dead HDD's, im gonna do some searching as well.. i most likely will see this person tomorrow. but since im leaving staples for a better job within the next week, i wanna get the chance to help someone before im done.

There are many companies that recover drives. Its all about how much is the data worth....

Most decent companes will charge around 1-2K depending on complexity and time.

I personally went with Seagates recovery services I thought they did a great job.

$1700 and 5 business days I had my data back in hand

ok so i hear u wanna get data off drive.. but this method works assuming problem is that laptop drive is dieing and not dead.. if itz ded, liek the PCB is ded.. then you are outta luck.. and u will have to pay company *thouzands* to get ur customerzes' data.. you could try freezing trick if HD is dieing.. stick drive in ESD baggie.. place in ziplock baggie.. place in freezer but not tooo long because if condensation forming... big trouble.. after a few minutez take out baggiez.. then you stick Laptop HD into xternal enclousure or just plug one of thoze universal thingiez into lappie HD.. then you boot up windoz or linux and try reading drive.. i think this has worked for people b4.. hope this helps u in your time of troublez.

That haz to be the mozt annoying pozt ever. Did the forums lower the minimum age requirement?

As said, it all depends on how "dead" the drive is. I've had very good luck with freezing the drive and using GetDataBack, all with an external IDE-USB device.

wow i assumed it was between 500-1000..i guess it was honeymoon pictures. and i think it was totally dead. when i hooked up to 2 external devices, it wouldnt see the drive at all, and the drive didnt seem to be spinning.

If the drive doesnt spin at all or not picked up by windows then yes you will need to go with a recovery service. Data backup is as important as the data itself.
This may be a time to shine and explain to the customer a backup strategy going forward.
