Recommendations for an i7 Build

Hello everybody,

I plan on building a new i7 rig within a week to retire the ol' dinosaur in my signature. I would prefer a modular power supply this time around as the concept sounds intriguing; I have always battled the PSU cabling throughout the life of this computer with its fixed connectors.

New specs will be:

Intel Core i7 920 (OC'd to 3.8~ GHz)
Asus P6T Deluxe
6GB Corsair DDR3 1600
ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
3-4 WD 1TB - 1.5TB HDD's

All will be housed in an ABS Canyon 695 case.

Any recommendations for a PSU would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I highly recommend getting this PSU if you drop your modular requirement:
BFG Tech BFGR800WESPSU ES-800 800W PSU - $110

If you really want modular, go with these:
Silverstone ST75F 750W Modular PSU - $110
Corsair 620HX 620W Modular PSU - $144

Thank you for the prompt response.. I appreciate it. I've heard quite a bit of good comments regarding the Corsair 620HX - shall I just go for it and call it a day? The 620HX is around $101 after Tax/Shipping/MIR/Cashback. I haven't really heard of Silverstone - how are they? As far as the BFG PSU, as you noted it isn't modular - what's your thoughts on a modular versus non-modular PSU?

I've been running with a cheap Thermaltake PSU for the past five years or more without issues. One thing I've been noticing is a lack of talk about PCP&P PSU's here - what's going on with them?

Thank you,

Silverstone is well known for making quality PSUs. They're on par with PC Power & Cooling and Corsair. As for the lack of talk about PC P&C PSUs, well they are quality PSUs but often or not there are cheaper but equal quality or at least decent PSUs out there. Hence why you don't see PC P&C recommended as much as Corsair or BFG or Antec here on the forums.

Modular PSUs do carry a price premium for their modularity as you noticed. The BFG PSU I recommended earlier is of equal if not better quality than the Corsair 620HX and offers more power as well. Thus, IMO, it's the better deal.

With that said, I own a modular PSU, the Corsair 520HX, and while it has helped with cable management, I ended up using most of the cables anyway . In addition, my case has a lot of places to hide cables. So in my case, it really didn't matter whether or not I had a modular PSU.

The Corsair 620HX is an excellent choice for a modular PSU so nothing wrong with going with that besides the higher price tag.

Thank you Danny, I sincerely appreciate you taking the time out to post. I've been out of the game for quite a while so I'm basically relearning what's good and what's not. ;) I suppose being modular isn't a requirement per se, but after thinking about how much larger the new case will be than my current one, I suppose it won't really matter. :p

I just got done reading the BFG ES-800 review on the [H] and it indeed looks like BFG turned itself around on PSU's. If you don't have any other suggestions, then I may as well just pull the trigger for an ES-800. For $70 AR, it sounds like a pretty good deal.

Thank you again,

You won't be disappointed by that BFG PSU. You are making a very good choice. 1 of my friends has it and couldn't be happier. The only thing I see being a problem in the future is the possibility of GPUs needing more amps. In that case a single rail would be more appropriate or maybe some more amperage on the rails but, for now, $80 dollars is a steal. Good luck with your computer and keep us posted on this PSU. I am building a new computer in these coming weeks and I am considering this PSU. On another note, it is nice to see people in the forums such as Danny Bui following up on threads and helping people make their decisions instead of plugging "I'd buy the _____ PSU" and skipping out of the thread without any reasoning.

Pull the trigger :D

Done.

Thanks for the additional input, I sincerely appreciate that. I also agree on your note about Danny Bui; it seems far few in between these days that people actually follow up to the threads that they post in, but rather post a quick "hit and run".

Well, everything for the new rig is ordered and everything should be here (hopefully!) on Monday or Tuesday.
