Well, I just picked up a Dell 2407 and have it plugged into my UPS.....fired up HL2:E1 last nite and my UPS started going crazy. Making sounds like it was unplugged from the wall but was just letting me know that it didnt have enough juice to support the computer and monitor.

not sure off hand what the wattage on the UPS is (im at work).....i was looking at some of the belkin UPS's since I can use the 40% off coupon but which one should I get?

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProd...t_Id=&Section_Id=76&pcount=&Product_Id=171926

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProd...t_Id=&Section_Id=76&pcount=&Product_Id=171958

those are just two that I found....if anyone can recommend something similar or better at a good price please post away!

thanks!

edit: almost forgot....my computer specs are in the sig

What happens with just your PC plugged in and not your monitor?

What make/model UPS do you have now?

How old is it?

it runs fine...i have them both plugged in right now and its normal but as soon as I go to play a game the UPS starts beeping which usually is when there is a power failure (blackout, etc).

The UPS I have now is a cyber power 585AVR and its about 4 years old. I just replaced the battery about 2 months ago.

Hmmm...seems a little odd. Is there anything else at all plugged into the UPS?

I just am trying ot keep you from spending any money unneccesarily here.

But if we have too you are looking at around 150?

I have a couple things plugged into the UPS but they are plugged into the "surge" spots and not the battery. How were those 2 belkin UPS's that I had linked earlier?

Honestly I am not a huge belkin fan....but they have AVR which is a good start. I am trying to figure out what topology they are right now. The very minimum type I would like to see someone get is a Line Interactive Pure Sine UPS.

See if you can't find a Tripplite Omnismart series...or if you don't mind doing the refurb thing APC Smart UPS or BackUPS RS.

yeah, just tried it out again and as soon as I go into the game (HL2:EP1) the UPS starts beeping. I unplugged the monitor while the game was on the it stopped. I just dont think there is enough power to support both the 24" monitor and the rig.

stupid Q: why does you monitor need UPS power?

so when the power goes out I'll be able to finish up what I am doing.....and yes, it has happened before

Why does anything need a UPS? A UPS isn't just about the occassional power outage. A quality UPS regulates the voltage going into your hardware to keep it clean and consistant. I've seen systems die because of "browning" issues. A quality UPS is a must have for your killer rig, unless you like replacing hardware.

I'm going to guess his 24' LCD set him back a decent amount of $$, so why wouldn't he want it protected to?

here's what i'm thinking - when you turn a game on, the video card starts using more power, thus the computer draws more power and brings it just above the recommended level of the UPS

my two cents.

youre probably right because when HL2 loads its fine....when the start screen appears its fine as well....but as soon as I get into the game and I hear the video card's fan go on the UPS goes crazy.

like i had assumed before the UPS doesnt have enough juice so I need something bigger and better.....however that reference to the UPS to look for on ebay does look like overkill. I just have my rig and monitor connected so I need something good.....not something top of the line.

btw: my monitor cost $800 so its a pretty nice investment.

how much would you like to spend on an UPS? I paid < $150 total for my 700 Va Liebert off e-bay and it easily powers 2 PCs. (Dell SC420 and my workstation with some high-power consuming items)

I got my GXT2 1500VA for $100 + non-ripoff s/h (forget the exact amount now) on Ebay :)

theres nothing on ebay right now for under $275 with the max being $1700

maybe consider a second, small UPS just for your monitor?

I'd rather just have one.

So if I went with APC would the one I linked to earlier be a good choice?

yes that APC would be a good choice, but it seem out of your price range at ~$280

hmmm why did i think that was under $100

maybe it was the belkin that was under $100

ill have to take another look.....would u recommend any other APC refurb units that are under $100?

edit: I tried looking on their site and there was about 1000 different models not sure which one is good....or which one I would need....help is appreciated.

That is kind of tough....the APC is a cheaper but it is a discontinued product. The Tripplite should be as good as the rest i nthe series but I have no personal experience with it. So...yeah...that isn't so much help.

Go with the Tripp Lite.

hmmm tough choice....im not really a big fan of that LCD screen....

if the APC is discontinued will I still be able to purchase a replacement battery?

edit: also the triplite is rated for 900VA / 475 watts while the APC is 450 Watts / 700 VA
