I am looking to play a MMO over christmas break with some spare time I have. I was wondering what the best MMO games are (besides WoW and LOTR:O).

To be honest, the last time I played a MMO was Lineage 2 and Everquest  But I'm open for suggestions.

Eve-Online, if you like the sometimes slower pace and are willing to put some time into it (long term).

what do you like in a MMO?

Aside from WoW, I believe the absolute best fantasy MMO at current is Warhammer Online. It just went through a HUGE patch today and released a couple of new classes!

Not to thread hijack, but were those the classes that weren't released on launch date?

On Topic, I've only ever played WoW and a veeery small amount of guild wars. I'd try out WoW's 14 day trial and level up a few characters, see if you like that. Since you said time over Christmas break, are you going to continue playing aftewards? Or is this something you're going to invest in? If not, i'd go crazy and pic up all the MMO demos you can.

Ok, id definitely NOT RECOMMEND WoW, unless u intend to give up ur social life and live in mommys basement, this is definitely not the game for you!

Id try Guild Wars, its fun, easy to pick up and play, and doesnt force you to give up ur social life

EQ2 has turned out to be a pretty good game IMO. WAR is fun and easy to get into, even for the casual player. Guild Wars is always a win.

Age of Conan, though the user base as shrunk substantially their last couple of patches have been nothing but great stuff plus they are merging serves before Christmas

I'd recommend Tyranny pvp as your server of choice

I have a 27 or something on tyranny, I stopped playing about a month after release, I am currently enjoying a free trial of lotro.. good game so far.

Eve Online. Keep in mind you'll need a longer attention span than a goldfish though. :)

All other MMO's pale in comparison, it's not even close.

Guild Wars. Played it for around 2 yrs. PvE kinda lost lust when the expansion came out (eye of the north) but the pvp is awesome. Still log in every once in awhile. very easy to get used to

Seconded, I have been playing that game since the second beta event and I really enjoy it.
I dont have to pay to play and while its got some shortcomings overall its the most fun I have had in an MMO. Hated WoW and have not tried war.

There are a lot of them out there, just need to try some of the demo's and see which one you like the most and which one fits your gaming style.

Give EQ another shot. I just resubscribed today and am having fun. You just have to pick a populated server. I am on the most popular, Maelin.

Worst MMO I've ever played. Bothced PvP, botched raiding, and botched PvE. Way to ruin a great franchise funcom.

Out of all of them, I'm enjoying LoTRO and WAR currently moreso then any of the others.

If you don't want to play WoW, check out the Vanguard free trial. It has really come a long way since launch.

I would have to give another vote to Guild Wars. Played it for since launch and loved it, but the pve does get boring in GWEN. that being said I played through most of the GW games will all 8 of my chars. If not GW then LOTRO is great. I currently have a few chars going...good fun.

You should go back to lineage 2 - level cap is 85 now and the game has changed tremendously

I'd vote Eve. Or maybe Clam Digger? :D I would stay away from the steaming pile o crap that is WAR.

Depends what you into... I like Dungeons and Dragons Online, but it's instanced, group based PvE, without PvP game... but still, community is nice, and it's one of those few MMOs which really don't force you into choosing a class and doing all the "auto level"... you can get own builds and so - just like in Neverwinter Nights or pen and paper D&D :)I've been playing it since beginning, and I really like this game. But if you in for PvP that it's bad choice :)

WH Online is decent one, though the pvp was bit hectic for me, looked rather like quake deathmatch "bang, bang, you dead, respawn, bang, bang, you killed someone, then got killed, respawn" :)

One thing I would NOT recommend are Pirates of the Burning Sea. It had potential, it had ideas... but then Devs listened to forum mob and whiners, and all hell broke loose. Basically it's a XVIII century sail ship game - with economy a bit more complicated - got different resources in port, you need lots of items to build ships and so on. But... it's gank/grief fest. If you want to PvP then you need a group of 6 ships, otherwise you will be ganked and sunk. And if enemy can't sink you, they will grief you to death.

lol, I actually still read AOC forums every once in a blue moon. It is funny, really funny. Their merger was a failure and caused a number of items to simply dissapear. Not sure if they have rolled back the changes to fix the issues. Funcom is the definition of fail, the new game director has done nothing significant which could revive the game. Game has been dying down, will continue to do so until Funcom gets their act together.

LOTRO is the shit. They have done a ton to make it even better. Trust me, if you decide to get it, won't regret it. Higher level areas are a joy, the Mines of Moria are simply AWESOME!!!

Really, vanguard is better? and im still pissed what a failure AoC was....it had so much potential.... :(

Let me tell you what this is going to come down to: every single one of these games is pretty much WoW made inferior in some way by comparison.

Warhammer Online is amazing on the RVR/PVP front, and decent on the PVE front. WOW is its opposite: good PVE, *sucky* PVP.

I love WAR, have been playing it since March in the beta and since launch on the live servers. It's really fleshed itself out since launch (which was pretty smooth anyway).

Go classic and try Ultima Online, which I've started playing again recently. Best of all, there are tons of private serves with thousands of players, which is free. :D

Nah, wow appeals to common gamer; simple as that. Other games have better features, they do lack certain areas that wow excels in. However, they do differ. For example, why do you think LOTRO isn't as popular? It is PVE oriented with a large number of quests/zones, however teh PVP is an afterthough.

I really liked WAR and was hoping it would tear me away from wow but it didnt. while i did like the classes better i ran into to glitch problems and it totally killed it for me.

I just bought Lineage 2 direct download for $20, which includes a free 30 day membership. Not too shabby.

I'm looking forward to playing it later on today when I am done with work/finals :p

lineage 2 has awsome graphics. Problem is it becomes a HUGE grindfest, and the majority of the player population is Russian. Not saying that I don't like Russians, just that they often don't talk in English.

I must say I really liked WAR too...but I didn't really have many friends (all wow players), and then WotLK came out, and I went back into wow (after like 1 year + of inactivity).

Now that I am 80 and realized that once again there is nothing to do other than running instances over and over, I am alrdy bored and am thinking of reopening my WAR account...The classes were cool and fun, and the PVP (RVR) is a lot of fun...
Plus I am curious about the black guard...

Wrath of the Lich King

But unless you enjoy doing dungeons, raids, or PvP, you'll get bored at 80 pretty fast. I enjoy raiding and PvPing when I'm not doing that so it's cool.

Patch 1.1a kicked ORvR into high gear. Pretty amazing now. Battles are epic and constant, no more keep flipping or constant scenario grinding. I constantly see battles of 4-5 WB's from EACH side fighting over keeps, BO's. It's great.

I got lineage II and it's kinda meh so far.

I'm on a server that's like a ghosttown. I swear I never see anyone

Well I just gave wow another break for the 2nd time in the last 3 years that I have been playing it. In fact I didn't even pick up WOTLK for 1 simple reason, I knew I would be back in the same bored state I was in after BC and that is, when not raiding your running instances or pvp grinding or arenaing and that gets old fast. So I decided to get off the WoW tredmill and picked up WAR a few days ago and while I haven't had a ton of time to play I have 2 lev 6 toons so far. a witchelf and a sorceress both destruction toons. At first i was like meh about it but I must say it's starting to grow on me and I think this wil be fun the further along I get. So far it seems cool.

I would say if you like PVP try WAR if your pve then wow, or lotr might suit you best.

As a side note. I did play AOC at lauch for 2 months this past spring and I must say I felt like everyone else. Game had GREAT potential and was the best looking MMO I have ever seen bar none. However, lack of polish, and content after lev 30ish along with game breakign bugs and a semi broken engine combined with shitty PVP/raiding drove me and thousands of other away. Shame really since the combat system, graphics and IP had alot going for it but in the end it wasn't enough. I'm still annoyed about AOC and the HUGE failure that is funcom. Bleh.

I just started playing Atlantica Online last week and find that its really fun. The combat reminds me of final fantasy and its solo friendly.

As a bonus its also free! :D

Screw EVE. Wait for Jumpgate Evolution. Skill based combat and dynamic economies are the best.
