G'day,

I was wondering if I could get a [H]ard recommendation on some headphones in the $50USD to $100USD price range. I'm Australian, so that may limit my purchase (I'm looking at no more than $200AUD, preferrably more like $100-150AUD).

I'm currently using a Sennheiser PMX60 and want to upgrade to some comfortable over the ear phones that'll be good for listening to music while I study, playing games occasionally and watching TV and movies (all of which I do on my PC). So they need to be comfortable enough to use for several hours at a time. I'm in a shared house, so blocking out a bit of background noise would be nice. I've read a bunch of reviews, but so often its nice to just get some recommendations from the [H] community rather than reviews.

Looking at the Sennheiser HD212 Pro, HD215 or HD555. The HD555 is pushing the upper limit of my budget already, so preferrably cheaper than that. All of these I can get a bit cheaper than retail price, which is why I'm considering them.

Are they any good? What would you recommend?

At the $150 mark you can get the Allessandro MS1i's which would be great for music although due to having zero soundstage would not be ideal for movies and gaming.

The Audio-Technica AD700's which retail in Australia for $200 you should be able to find used on head-fi for around $140 - $150 incl. shipping. The AD700's have a wide soundstage which seems to make them ideal for gaming and they'll be fine for watching tv/movies.

Well I picked up some HD280s. Got an awesome deal, so even if they are trash I wont be crying.

The sound out of them is decent, though they tend to crush my skull a bit, waaaay too much clamping force. Also the headband sits a bit uncomfortably, so I put a piece of foam between the top of my head and the band as after a couple of hours it was getting uncomfortable.

So yeah, good sound, but a bit uncomfortable given I was looking for something that I could wear for hours on end while studying/gaming/watching movies. Because they are closed, they tend to amplify any noises happening inside your head (like if you're eating food you wont hear anything but your own chewing), this combined with the tight clamping force meant after a while I started hearing my own pulse quite clearly through them (cut off circulation + amplification).

Really need to find a way to reduce the clamping force. I've heard of people bending the band out, but I've also heard of a lot of people breaking the band so I dont really want to try it (it wouldn't surprise me if they were broken while their owners attempted to bend the band to lighten the skull crushing).

Loving my HD555's a lot. Though, I modded the crap out of them so it did take a while to get the perfect sound for me.

I'm a big fan of LTB's AC97 Magnum headphones (the red ones). I'm by no means an audiophile, but for the price they perform well for my games, movies, and music needs.

I'm just kicking myself for not buying them a few weeks ago when they were on sale... The set I've had for about 3 years got murdered by my 3-year old son...

try putting them between a few thick books when your not using them, after a month of this they will begin to loosen

Creative Aurvana Live

It's uses the same drivers and about the same design as the Denon D1000 / 1001. However, it uses cheaper structural parts (plastic vs. Denon's metal), so it isn't as durable. It will sound just as great though, and it fits your budget.

Somebody should create a sticky of recommended headphones for certain price ranges and use.
