Hey All
I'm really intrested in Folding and i really appreciate how it is helping find a cure!!
Just started on some rigs yesterday.
I am looking to build a new server for my home with more storage and I would like to pick out a good cpu (hopefully an Intel) that will turn out good results.

Which cpu would you recommend for around $150? I can go no higher than $175 on the cpu.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 is ~170$ or Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 for 125$ (but it has smaller cache so it will be slower then E6550 at same speed)

It might be easier to OC E4500 because it has default FSB only 200 (11 multi) - E6550 has FSB 333 (7 multi).

 
E4500 is $144 at the egg, and it's got a 12x multiplier.

Even with a really lousy board it should be able to either FSB OC to over 3GHz or you can BSEL mod the chip to 3.2.
 
The order of core from best to worst is Kentfeild -> Conroe -> Allendale.

The cheapest Kentsfeild is the Q6600. At ~$200 its probably outside your price range but it is the best cheap-ish CPU in terms of Points per $. should fold around about 300 PpD per Ghz with a couple of VM's.

Afterr that is the Conroe core CPU's due to their bigger L2 cache. Should fold around about 300 PpD per Ghz.

Last is the Allendale core. Low end ones are cheap. Get a good overclockable one and your ok. Should fold around about 250 PpD per Ghz.

I bought a evga nForce 610i motherboard. It has a integrated video, support for 45nm processors and 1333 MHz FSB for around 50$. This is a great option for a dedicated box.

 
If you have a Microcenter near, run by there and pick up a Q6600 for $200. I wish that deal had happened a couple weeks ago and we had a Microcenter around here. It would have saved me over $120 on the two Q6600s I just bought. You can't beat a Q6600 for $200 right now. Just do a little research to make sure it's a G0 stepping for cooler temps and better overclock potential.

As for boards, I'm partial to Gigabyte boards right now. This one should do well for overclocking. The only thing you have to worry about with it is vdroop which is pretty bad when overclocking quads. But raising the voltage in the BIOS to compensate seems to work well. The P35 chipset seems to be about the fastest for folding as there is a little difference between it and some other chipsets, especially the nvidia ones it seems. I have the DS3R version of that board and I love it. The Q6600 on it is running at 3.6Ghz right now.

 
I think you would save money in the long run by using less electricity with the Q6600.
