Hi all,

Just looking for general recommendations for a screen recorder. I have been using freeware (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2009.03.utilityspotlight2.aspx) however the colors are a bit crappy because of compression and it doesn't seem to work well on Windows 7 32-bit systems.

Can anyone recommend good screen recording tools? Freeware would be best however if I've to pay a little to get something that works like a dreamboat my work may be able to fork it out.

Thanks in advance :)

Open Broadcaster System (OBS)

A quick rundown of the software I recorded not too long ago:

Website for OBS: http://obsproject.com/

You can do the following:
  • Capture contents from any active monitor.
  • Game capture (experimental)
  • Window capture
  • Selective screen region capture
  • Stream to Twitch.tv/Justin.tv.
  • Save any screen capture to hard drive if you'd like.
If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I have this and Xsplit (Premium), as I tend to stream on Twitch.tv often.

This worked a treat, Took a bit of configuring and doesn't work immediately straight out the box but I mean hell....1) It's free 2) It's still in Beta. Thanks :) For anyone else that downloads this, remember to make sure you right click on the empty sources section to add a source ("Software Capture" if you want to capture the screen rather than do a live stream. You also have to ) set the Broadcast Settings to "File Output Only" if you just want to create a screencast.

There are many applications who can record screen and all audio activities on your computer. I use camstudio and it works fine for me. There are also few other software who considered good like Screen Hunter, Snagit and hypersnap etc. Even some software allow you to edit the recorded video in same application.
