recommend a good submersible pump?

Hey all,

I have been poking around trying to find a good submersible pump at all the reputable online watercooling stores without much luck.

I'm looking for the following:
  • Submersible pump
  • 12V computer molex powered
  • Standalone pump (not part of a reservoir)
  • Powerful enough for a decent loop (two rads, 1 CPU block, two GPU blocks)
  • Probably won't see more than a foot or two of height increase over the loop.
  • Noise levels within reason.

Are there any good pumps like this, or will I have to resort to aquarium pumps and build some sort of relay in order to have them power on when the computer goes on?

I haven't seen any quality submersible pumps in many years. My guess is you'll need to go with an aquarium/pond pump like you mentioned.

Hmm.. The relay I can deal with, but I was hoping to find a pump marketed towards water cooling as I don't know what I am looking for in a pump...

I have no idea what kind of aquarium pump would provide the required pressures to power through the restrictive flow of CPU blocks, GPU blocks and radiators without being overkill and blowing hoses off things.

Does anyone have experience in selecting pumps designed for other purposes and applying them to WC setups? What would you choose?

These two things are making absolutely zero sense to me. Why do you need a submersible pump if you aren't putting it in a resevoir?

I am putting it in a reservoir, but I am making my own custom reservoir, not using a pre-made one. As such I don't want it to be one of these where the pump is built into the reservoir.

That being said, if the pumps in these are halfway decent, I may just buy the whole thing, and rip the pump out of the reservoir and put it in my custom one.
 
I honestly don't think that pump is powerful enough to do what you are asking. Other than that one, though, I don't even know of another submersible pump, period.
 
I found a few on Amazon, but I know next to nothing about them, and they don't come with PQ curves, so its tough to make a decision:

Seeing how cheap they are, I guess I could just get one, build a loop mockup and see if I am happy with the flow. problem is I don't know what kind of flow I should be getting :p

That last one is the only one I'd say is even worth a try. The others' flow rates are just too low I think. None of them, however, list vertical head pressure, unfortunately, and that's a vital spec. They do list horizontal "range," but that's next to useless as far as I can tell.

My best guess is that XSPC 750 pump is still better than any of those.
 
Well, after playing around with Martin's optimizer spreadsheet, I think the XSPC 750 pump actually could handle three blocks and two rads. You would just have to really limit your block selection to extremely high flow blocks. Generally you want to get at least a 1GPM flowrate, but 0.80GPM should be enough in most circumstances.
 
I ran this pump back in the day, and this relay card that sits in a PCI slot, with manual on/off for testing. Came in quite handy. The pump is an Eheim 1250, and i believe it's submersible. Both for sale if interested!

Yes, the 750 is submersible.

I didn't realize the Eheim pumps were submersible! The 1250 is a little better than the 750 on paper, too.

Just so I understand where you are coming from, what makes you think only the last one is worth trying?

The published flow rates are pretty high (the lowest ~1 gpm, the highest just under 2 gpm). is it that they don't list vertical head pressure, and as such you are assuming they don't perform well with head pressure?

It hummed, but didn't whine. I ran it inline, not submerged, so i would say it shouldn't make much noise if you are submerging it.

Horizontal "range" should be quite a bit higher than vertical head pressure, I assume, and the horizontal numbers that are listed are only average at best. Therefore I would assume their vertical "range" is even lower.

The published flow rates are theoretical flow rates with zero resistance. The 1GPM that I mentioned is the flow rate of the entire cooling system once everything is set up and connected.
 
try a fountain pump if you want high static pressure, i bought one a while back when i was looking into making a volenti cooler
