I just upgraded to an eVGA gtx 280 from an 8800 gtx.
This braught my suposedly SLI ready 600 watt power supply to its knees. (and not in a good way) It can handle only one of the two cards pluged in.
I had thought to keep the 8800 in the second pci-e slot for physics support and to have my second monitor attached to it. I also have a 19" laying around and well nothign wrogn with 3 monitors, right?
I see two (or three) monitors with the extra seperated from my main gaming card to be a win.
What, please, are some sugestions for a more, modern, and capible power supply unit?
This last one is modular and I really like the way that works. Makes putting in cables and managing them so much easyer.
I also found that the 280 takes an 8pin conecter as well as a 6, instead of the two six pin conections I was expecting. The card came with an adapter so I could use two molex conections to power it, stating this is for temporary use only.
Next month, when I have some discretionary funds in the budget again, what is a good power supply brand and perhaps model to look for. Based on pricing I like going to Frys (3 block trip, easyer to return etc) but for more then $25 or so I am also happy using mail order.
After having a generic (comp usa) brand PS literaly blow up on me, complete with a deafening bang, sparks, and smoke I will never go with a generic brand again. (mother board and all componates survived, literal 1 day after the return policy expired)
