Hi

I am moving over from nvidia and wanted to know of a good card for roughly 250$. Suggestions?

Thanks

r9 290 / 290X depending on your area or internet sites offered. Unless you buy a 280X as a stop-gap for the new AMD cards but I doubt there will be anything good in the $300 range when the old stock is phased out.

Microcenter has some Diamond reference refurbished 290X for $260, looks like a very good deal imo.

The reference cooler for the 290X is both very loud and ineffective, they cause the card to throttle constantly. If you buy a reference 290X, budget in replacement cooling.

I think you want a 290/290X if you can snag one at that price either on sale or used.

Every summer PNY 760 gtx over heats and locks up. I cranked the fans on it as well and even have the case door off. I am going to take it apart and see if the heatsink isnt touching the chip I guess.

if that fails I have to buy something. It locked up 4 times yesterday, like clockwork when the temp goes above 75 my hell starts

The thermal paste is shot. It hardens up after 2 years and you have to replace it.

you won't necessarily have to budget for an aftermarket cooler with a reference 290/290x. replacing the stock paste and thermal pads will suffice. it'll still be loud as fuck on the uber setting, but the clock throttling will go away.

750W (or greater) power supply with two 150W 8-pin PCI Express power connectors recommended

for 290....wtf?!

I just opened it up, yes the old paste was hard, removed all the dust(was a decent amount in the heatsink) and cleaned then reapplied paste and put her back together.

Tonight I'll try it out. if it still locks up the card must be crud

Thanks

What the hell.
Since when does AMD bunduru with GTA V?

I knew it was a Gaming Evolved game.

I like that - plus it comes with Grand Theft Auto V free

Miners loved the hell out of that card.

Great cooler, silent action - about as good as it gets for a AF R9 290 offering.

I think its fixed. I reset my bios back to default and it doesn't lock up anymore. I noticed I had a slight oc and probably messed with oc setting to make it unstable. Weird thing was i had to reactivate with windows after I set bios back to default
