i'm using a fair amount of batteries in my mouse, digi cam, etc and want to consider rechargeables.
so far the only criteria on my mind is ni-mh.
i am not sure which ones to get, which brands do you recommend. is there a difference from generic chargers/battery and branded ones?

The higher the amperage, the longer the charge will last. However, you need to decide how much you want to spend. Personally, I wouldn't spend more than $25, but it's your call. The cheaper sets also tend to have slower chargers. 2000 to 2100 mAh (millamp hours) is about average, I don't think the nasty cost associated with 2300 mAh batteries is worth it. Check a Best Buy / CompUSA / Circuit City / Ritz Camera and scope out the selection. Most sets come with four batteries, so you'll have to consider how many batteries you need.

For example, my MS desktop elite set takes 3 for the keyboard, and 2 for the mouse, so four isn't quite enough. However, most of what I've heard is that they keyboard batteries tend to last forever.

if you have the money - get the good ones - duracell or energizer... but if you don't want to spend that much, you can get a generic 2300 mAh pretty cheap...
 
I bought a Rayovac four-AA NiMH recharger from Wal-Mart, and then had my dad (he works at an electrical wholesaler) get me four more batteries, which are Rayovac. The batteries are good and last a long time (depending of course on the device).
 
Most any digi-cam site which reviews batteries will indicate Maha energy corp products. The Powerex stuff by them is generally some of the best. Also they are reasonably priced.

These products typically hold and distribute their charge more reliably than some of the other brands. Its like PSU's, ya just cant go by the amperage.

I think I got some combo deal from another online source for a set of 4, charger/conditioner and car kit for $20.

I have been using Rayovac rechargeable batteries for a few years now and haven't had any trouble with them and the charger. I use them mainly for my flashlight, digicam (cheap, old POS that I got for free years ago) and my walkman at work. I've also used them in some of my son's toys. As I said, I've never had a problem with them and will keep using them myself.
 
I use rechargable nomem pros by lenmar from frys usually its about 10/$10 when its on sale. Good batteries.
 
I refuse to buy garbage batteries anymore, I bought 40 for 14$ once and they seemed to die every so often that I ended up spending more then if I had bought some decent ones.

And I haven't replaced the batteries in my keyboard or mouse for months. BTW if you want REALLY long lasting batteries go for LiON, they are expensive but they rule.
