i am running on a nvidia ecs microatx board and a Q9450. real temp only is reporting temps on the first 2 cores. the other 2 cores say 70C and dont' change. did i do something wrong? i'm running the most current version.

Some 45nm Intel CPUs have been known to possess stuck DTSes. It's unusual to have it happen on more than one core, but it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility. Try downloading Core Temp as well and set it to display the distance to TJmax, and see if the numbers on those cores change at all. If it's stuck as well, chances are those cores do in fact have faulty DTSes.

yep its stuck on core temp as well. ah man :(. should i really worry about it then? i have a xigametek i will bolt down on it soon so that should alleviate any uneven mounting. :(

seems like one of the stuck cores goes up 1 or 2 degrees past its stuck point, but not below. i find that very weird.

any way to fix?

There's no way to fix it as far as I know. What you should do is try and judge your temps based on the readouts from the unstuck cores. The other two will run at similar levels, so as long as one pair is doing well, you don't have to worry about the other.

Interesting, you may have the first Intel "defective" chip suitiable for warranty return I have ever noticed on this forum. Bummer.

The issue is quite common; I doubt he's the first one here to experience it here. It's also not the chip itself that's defective, only two of the DTSes that are attached to it.
