RealPlayer Gets Badware Label

wasn't too bad when it came out as realaudio, but soon after it went to hell. i still will install it from time to time to see if it's improved but always end up removing it.

Real was okay back around 1997 or '98 but it sucks now. Good to see people paying attention to it. I still see options for Real streams here and there and I'd rather pass, even if there is an 'alt' version out there.

Seriously...when was this POS software ever not badware? I remember it was crap in the late 90s and obviously, it's still crap now. It's a shame that some institutions, including those of higher learning, still require the player to be used to view online videos of classes.

Who the hell do they think they are Microsoft?

All these softs start off free, and get people to install and maybe even use the stuff.
Then they make all their money selling 3rd party softs a backdoor onto your system.

Its getting that everything wants to spy, pry and screw with your system in one way or the other. AND just like Sony they don't care what happens to you.

This is all you have to know about using Realplayer:

They used to be good when internet radio was in it's infancy. It's a shame to see them like this. Some companies tend to think that success gives them the license to bone their customers. Real and Sony needs to wise up.

When Real started going bad, I started listening to netradio.com and sputnik7.com. Those were the days.

They probably didn't want to lay down and die. I mean they saw what happened to Netscape. It seemed like a last ditch effort.

I liked Realplayer 10.5, never had a issue with installing garbage. It was a nice solid program and played my mp3's using less memory and cpu usage then WMP, Winamp and any other mp3 player I could find.

However Realplayer 11 sucked big time and crashed all the time. I also use Rhapsody since its my music service and its software drives me nuts with TONS of bugs. I think they fired all their good programmers and hired a bunch of chimps instead.

But Rhapsody keeps expanding, it took over Urge a few months ago and as of today it is taking over Yahoo Music. Rhapsody also has the best catalog I can find in music. I just wish their software was half way decent.

lol its the worst. Unfortunately, a lot of sites use .rm format for streaming/downloadable video.

Nothing a Media Player classic can't handle though :)

QFT, <3 MPC. I don't have realtime or quicktime installed. Recent versions of iTunes take forever to add songs to my ipod (shuffle) so I use winamp for that. It literally take 5 times longer to add a song via itunes.:(

...and, who thought different?

Full disclosure, hah!

you want the truth? you can't handle the truth!

Didn't Dell used to include RealPlayer in their pre-loaded crap software? If so, then don't ya think many people felt that since Dell included it then it must be good?

...just a thought

Couldn't say. The only boxed computer I've ever bought in my entire life was an IBM PS/2 50/55sx. I can't recall ANY bundle in that one ;)

Got PCDOS 7.0 for it though lol

RealPain(inmyass)er

Real Alternative or my personal favorite media player...KMPlayer for pain relief. :)

I only recently found that KMP will play .rm and .mov files, seems there's not much it won't play.

Yup gotta say KMPlayer works way better than Real Player. That plus Real Alternative = problem free.

Is this article really all that surprising?

I haven't had RealPlayer installed onto any of my systems since the mid 90s because of its bloat / adware hogging system resources and intrusive nature into my privacy.

If RealNetworks would address the concerns of its users / subscribers then maybe I would go ahead and purchase RealPlayer Pro. Until that time, they won't be seeing any of my money.

I'll be glad to see the back of RealPlayer, lets hope this is a nail in the coffin.
Media Player Classic ftw :)

I took a music class in college. Many of the songs he wanted us to listen to were streamed via real player from the university.

Leave it to the educational institutions to be dragging the rest of the world down, prolonging the death of such crapware
Seriously though, if it isn't a sort of technical (gee, even THEN...) oriented school, more often than not they rely on old, outdated technology or propriety crap that nobody uses anymore...

Does it play FLV? If so, hook us uninformed heathens up with a link :)

worked fine. It was either that or some quicktime file I could never get to work.
